Hi all

Managed to grab a couple of days down in kerry again over the weekend, one day on the shore and one on the boat, with my dad and friend andy.

On sat we began by collecting bait for wrasse fishing, we had already got some rag and we added a couple of dozen hard back crabs and peelers to this for wrasse fishing. We also came across the largest blenny i have ever seen in a rock pool

i didnt see any ill effects of the red tide that had hit the area in recent weeks bar one small dead conger at the back of the skellig hotel ( but i have seen them washed up here before), there were plenty of shrimp , worm and crabs about and it looks like the worst has well passed.

Next stop was for my dad to try a spot of fly fishing for sea trout or mullet while Andy and I got or wrasse gear ready. My dad had only been fishing for five mins with a butcher when we heard a shout and looked to sea his fly rod bent double as a fish headed for sea. He had a great scrap from it and at first thought iit was a big sea trout but as it rolled in the surf i caught site of the dorsal and knew it was a big mullet.

It fought on for a couple more minutes before i was able to hand it out. It was a cracker and went straight on the scales. It went 6lbs 1oz with the sling deducted.

Next stop was a spot of wrasse fishing but the weather had started to turn a bit rough and rainy so the main marks we wanted to fish had to be discounted. We were still able to fish a couple of more sheltered spots and we managed a few wrasse with Andy getting his first proper one at 4lbs 14oz.

On the sunday it was out from Scragane pier in Danny Mc Carthys Boat MV Deep cove but the weather had not cleared and it was too rough to safelt fish any of the marks we wanted to around the Maherees or brandon head. We had to content ourselves with catching mackerel and pollack to four pounds on the Tralee bay side of the islands.

The mackerel and pollack were plentiful however and at least we were able to stock up with a few macks for pike bait during the winter.

We had a quick drop at anchor in tralee bay to try for a tope but it was hard to hold bottom and we only managed a few doggies to at least keep us entertained

And that was about it

Interesting about the red tide. What area did it affect. I was down fishing the SPA last weekend and there were no fish biting. We were told there was a large dead stinger up from where we fishing.

Hi

According to the marine institute and the local info it affected tralee and dingle bay worst. (it seemed to hit the whole of dingle bay from inch all the way to dingle itself) . there was damage to invertebrate stocks with prawns and lug etc. dying and also fish such as flounder and congers were hit.

with the higher winds last week it has cleared but danny did say that tralee bay had been fishing very badly the last few weeks since the red tide started
