west coast species bash!!! 21/4/11

Results:long & short spined sea scorpions, corkwing wrasse, goldshinny wrasse, tompot blenny, pollock, coalfish and a rock goby!!

The day was planned, but as always there is always something to get in the way! so with a quick text to postpone fishing for a few hours, band rehearsal could take place.
Some things should be written in stone, but we’ll leave that for the epitaph. After a rather productive rehearsal a text was sent out again and fishing was on!.
Alas the tide waits for no man, and with building traffic in town it was going to be a while before my chauffeur appeared, but thankfully it was a late tide so we had a few hours to get to the fishing mark and catch a few species, after all it was not size we were after, but species of the mini variety. even though big ones are always welcome to nibble on the baits too.
The lift arrived and a quick chat about where to venture and what baits to use and a plan was under way, to travel out the back of beyond, and a little further to a little known mark that looks like it could hold a fish or dozen. the weed in between the rocks looked like it could hold quite a few species alone, and a few deep patches look like a conger or two may be present!
Keeping it light I set up my spinning rod, with a small 3 hook paternoster just over a foot in length with size 4 hooks, baited with small strips of mackerel.
I was first off with a long spined sea scorpion. A rather small fish, but it was a start to the species hunt!
Soon after I caught a goldshinny wrasse, but alas the photo of that didn’t come out as good as I thought (note to self, check the pics before returning the fish to the depths it came from)
then soon after I caught another fish, a small pollock
Now this is what you call productive species hunting, a few more pollock and long spined sea scorpions made it to the baits, but alas i had just caught them so new species were being sought after.
And it wasn’t long before a new species made it to the baits! this time a nice little corkwing wrasse.
A beautiful coloured fish and a nice little fighter on light gear.
By now fish were coming in fairly regularly, but mostly the same species I had already caught.. time for something new.
And as soon as i said it, low and behold another species to the list, a cute little fellow we can call tom!! a tompot blenny to be exact!
Then for some reason the fishing started to slow down? these things happen, but thankfully I was able to pluck out another species. A coalfish this time..
Not exactly a large specimen of a fish, but at least a new species! which is all that mattered for the day.
Then a stranger appeared, a short spined sea scorpion, its been a few years since I caught one of these, and a welcomed surprise to the species hunt!
The fishing was exceeding all expectations by now, and with seven species for the day so fart that was me rather happy, and still in daylight too..
Another stranger appeared, but this turned out not to be a stranger at all but my girlfriend who travelled out to see me came directly from work, some travelling done there! and brought cake, chocolate cake too. So with fishy fingers tucked into a rather nice treat, And I can hear ye all saying ewww!, be thankful we didn’t lick our fingers, even though it was very tempting as the chocolate goo was rather nice!!
and back to fishing again, by this time plenty of fish were showing up, but new species were becoming harder to find. Then after quite a wile I managed to pull up this little beauty..
A black goby, and just as light was fading fast too, the tide was also beginning to ebb as well, so time was running out on catching a new species for the night!
Hunger was starting to weigh on my mind now, and even though there was more cake to be had, it was time for something a little more substantial, so rods were packed and tracks were made.. will definitely be fishing that place again in hopes of more species, pity its out where it is and not just down the road!!
