Report:
Desperate to put my last blank behind me, I headed down to South Wicklow to see what I
might tempt out from the depths. Arrived to a flat calm sea, so straight away I knew that
Bass were out the window and put all my chips on the Smoothies ! Had the beach to myself
so setup not too far from entrance. Plonked all my gear on the beach, sat down, took in the scenery
with the warm sun and even though I knew my fishing chances wouldn't be great it was still
great to be out.
Anyway looked up the beach a bit to my left and have to say that I was disgusted to see the
amount of rubbish that was left on the beach !!! It ranged from beer cans, plastic bottles,
plastics bags, plastic containers, newspapers, etc, etc. Sad to say that it was also left by
some fellow fishermen and if they are on this forum reading this, you know who you are and shame on
you! If the rubbish wasn't bad enough, there were also rigs left behind with all their hooks attached and
two pairs of scissors - I just hoped no one stepped on them earlier. I won't go on about it but it's
disappointing to say the least and gives all us fishermen a bad name.
So after my first cast, I set the rod down and then filled half a bin bag with the rubbish
in only a few minutes! Of course I kept the scissors, stripped the rigs down and kept the hooks, swivels,
clips, impact leads and some beads so again if you're reading this - Thanks !
With the beach tidy, I could now finally relax and once all the gear was sorted, I did some spinning
on my second rod moreso to pass the time. As expected, it was all quiet for the first couple of hours and
when the sun went down I started to get some bites. First in was a dab- me thinks(can't be 100% on that, so
correct me if I'm wrong when u see the pic?). It came in at a whopping 23cms but I had to put him back as I
wasn't sure if I would be able to carry the extra weight

I now had two rods on the bait and while sitting down
I saw a few swirls in the water just a few feet out. Didn't know what it was,Mullet I thought and a while after
some sea trout starting jumping right in front of me in a kind of teasing kind of way. Decided against changing
back to the spinning outfit and lobbed a sandeel out to see if I could tempt them but to no avail.
Was gettin plenty of bites all night but not all connecting. Caught about 5 doggies(one even put up a fight!)
and one starry pup in the end.
Overall it was an enjoyable night with a full moon so the beach was bright but the sea was waaaay too calm!
anyway as they say - Onwards and upwards....
till the next time,
steve
