The silver fellas are back in town, East Cork 21 Mar 2011

Tue Mar 22, 2011 3:29 am

People: Me

Duration: 6pm till 10.30pm

Tide: HW at 6.30ish

Weather: mild, overcast, slight onshore breeze

Bait: Lug and peeler

Rigs: 2 hook flapper and pennel pulley

Results: 1 coalie, 1 flounder, 2 bass

Report:
Finished exams today so decided I was due a treat so hit the beach with high hopes. Conditions looked decent enough, first time in a while my hands didn't get cold after the first hour. Fishing away for 3 hours with only a small flounder and coalie too show for it. Was thinking of calling it a day but I decided to finish off the few lug I had left as I didn't fancy bringing them home. Litterly packed them on the hook to use them up for my last cast.

I threw that rod out and started to reel in the other to bait up for last cast and to my surprise a fish started kicking when I got it in close, I didn't even see a tap or feel him on until he was about 15 feet in front of me, up came a chunky 42cm bass :D :D :D . I was delighted. My first bass of 2011 and only my secound ever (and biggest). Decided to bait that rod up again and of course as i'm about to put it on the tripod after casting the other one got a knock. Seemed more like the cod bites i'm used to but lifted into it, it was definitely on but I knew by the way it was fighting it wasn't a cod. Got it in and sure enough it was another bass, a bit chunkier and a 46cm PB. :D :P :D Chuffed..

Stayed on for another half hour before packing up, happy days!

Well done on your first bass of 2011 :!: :!:

I am a great believer in large baits for bass. Forget the size 1 three hook flappers, three or four nine inch long, thick juicy lug or a full razor on a 4/0 or 6/0 pennel pulley is my preferred way to go.

i agree with you there.well done tom

Yeah the 46cm on in the first pic actually had a 2 holes in the opposite side of him one you could have stuck the tip of your thumb into, the other was smaller and not as deep. I thought maybe an otter or seal or something had grabbed hold of him. They weren't that fresh if I was to guess i'd say they were on him a week or so. Maybe your right lads you'd have more experience than me.

I only got my first last year, a little schoolie on a lure, exciting stuff, will be doing more spinning and plugging soon. Keep cracking away though and with luck you should have one.

I don't see any net marks - just a bit of scale damage near the tail. If they were net marked there would be a lot more damage further forward on the fish, particularly around the gills and dorsal fin. Unless the fish swam backwards into a net!

Never had one on the home turf, might give it a go this summer when I visit.

I've been trying for the last few weeks so hopefully I will get a few more on my wish list. Still plenty of species i've yet to catch.

Fingers crossed, one around the 5 pound mark would be very nice by the end of the year. I'll keep at it...

right you are frank, I usually throw out a pretty big bait on a pennel pulley, usually a big razor, or two small ones, or a whole peeler and have a two hook rig out with 2/0 hooks with lug if I have em. Must try them on the pennel as both bass fell to the lug and I wasn't getting anything on the crab and razor. I think lug worms work better on that beach anyway. Cheers for the tip.

I was fishing Sunday night and had 3 bass on lug, I had razor on the second rod and didn't have a tap on it, apart from a coalfish. Normally I find razor a good bait but with the weak surf at the moment it looks like the bass are just feeding on lug. I think it was probably the same beach you were fishing - I find that crab doesn't work too well there, lug always outfishes it.

My thoughts exactly, I'm gonna spend that extra bit of time tomorrow digging some extra lug. Get a few to really pack on and see how that goes for me. Cheers!
