Iona, trust me there is plenty of promise on this site, decent lads, a lot with very good points too. I foul hooked a sea gull before Micko and that was an accident too  , I believe Iona when he says it was hooked on a green feather as they chase small fry and zoo plankton(green). So micko that makes perfect sense when you add it up.

Iona, you don't have to kill a specimen if its caught on shore and properly documented, that only applies to boat caught fish. Fair play to you for returning the fish alive, its a good example to the rest of us. The Sunfish picture for me shows that you really don't know whats out there and what we can land and that is the best part of Sea Angling. 8)

I think that even for boat caught specimens, you only have to send in (ie dead) certain species that can be confused easily, ie is it a big LSD or small huss???? I think there's about 8 species involved altogether. For example, you would be unlikely to confuse a John Dory with anything, so as long as the weight can be verified, there's no doubt.

Mind you, I'm eating my lunch at my desk again, and the works canteen seem to have sold me haddock as cod again. Happy days...

That might be true alright but I thought you had to weight the fish on Land because a scales does not work correctly on a boat, where is Norman Dunlop when you need him.

"I'm no expert on the whole weighing of fish etc. Don't care for it, I'm quite happy if I catch something at all.

The sunfish mightn't be so rare though, although to get one on a line has got to be a once in a lifetime event.

Seems that one was also spotted here...

""I did not see any dolphins but my husband and I did spot a sunfish which is even rarer. We spotted the sunfish whilst fishing the mid channel rocks near Milford. It was approx one metre across.

they're not exactly conducive to live fish.

how many anglers can get a fish to a shop and back alive or carry certified scales with them on shore ventures. suppose they are ok for record claims but tricky for specimen claims.

i think my avon dial scales are good but no that good.

You don't have to bring the fish to a shop as they are only certified for fruit and veg!!! You can buy a scales for say 50-80 quid, something like a Berkley digital or basic Salter, you then send it into the CFB and they will send you back your scales and a certificate stating its certified to weigh fish. After that you just bring along a digital camera or any disposable camera would do and measuring tape and take about four snaps of the fish, one including the scales reading and grab a decent passer by to witness it and bobs your uncle, send it into the CFB and walla they will send you back your cert to hang up beside your wedding photo!! not to mention a nice few pints at the specimen fish awards :P

not sure about the sending the scales away though since i'm in bonnie scotland.

Well the way around that would be to order it through an Irish Tackle Shop dealer such as Henry's tackle, and ask him to get it certified before sending it over to you.

I thought Scotland had the NFSA?, but obviously there would no good Guiness at those events

strangely the NFSA is english :?

we have the SFSA. the less said about that mob the better. they couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery

i enjoyed my holiday and will be back. everyone was really friendly and very forth coming with information some bad but mostly good. the bad was probably just unfortunate rather than malicious.
nice place and people.
good god even my missus enjoyed it and she takes a bit of pleasing.

well everything i do is wrong
