Storm Beach Kerry

Tue Feb 08, 2011 9:11 pm

People:ME

Duration: 2pm-4.30pm
Tide:low water

Weather:Strong Southern offshore wind

Bait:Lug Frozen Sandeel

Rigs: 2 single dropper pennel rigs

Results: Thornback Ray,,Bass

Had some lug dug, to use when the surf died down a bit here in kerry..Lug were nearing the end of its life so today was the day.. Went to a local storm beach.. Conditions not great, Strong offshore southern wind flattening the surf,, Water very brown from recent heavy rain.. Set up two rods. One with lug moderate cast, One with sandeel long cast.. Both rods picked up a ton of weed so was thinking of calling it a day but ended up moving further along the beach..Got both rods fishing with out anymore weed.. With the stong off shore wind it was very hard to see if there were any bites on the rods but after about an hour and a few casts noticed slack line on rod baited with sandeel. Wound down and struck into what I was hoping was a bass.. Fish faught very hard and took a fair bit of coaxing and bulling to get in, Turned out to be a Thorn back Ray of a about 6lbs.. Not what I hoping for but still a good fish..Fished for another hour without out any action. Baited up with my last two lugs and casted, put second rod back in car and removed my waders.. After 10 minutes another slack line bite, wound down and struck another decent fish which turned out to be 3lb Bass. My first of the year and a very welcome fish on a day then conditions were so bad..

Well done on the fishing.
That ray you caught is a painted ray also known as a small eyed ray

Nice fishing :D

The only problem with the report is it will start giving me ideas that shouldn't be there this time of year and it will lead to a very horrible unsuccessful hunt :(

The painted Ray in Tralee can be caught behind the waves on surf beaches (according to Eugene Farrelly) :D

Very well done a great result with not the best bait. Nice to see the painted ray, much better than a thorny any day. Well made bass there too.

Might have to get the rods out, not that there in the house thy are in the motor, just need the bait and away I will go.

Best regards Wez
