Had put up a post on the meets, buddys threads for a beach session with a more experienced angler/anglers for a beach session around cork and to pick up a few pointers. I had arranged to go out on sat to an east cork mark with Razor2 depending on the weather. Things didn't look good weather wise from the start of the wknd plus my car broke down on friday. Picked up a rental motor and although the weather looked ruff we decided to head out and check out the mark anyway. Collected crab in youghal off bhoy32 (cheers by the way) and headed for the mark, razor2 was there already, I got a wee bit lost on the way to the mark but by the time I was back on track razor2 was already on the way back home as the wind and surf was too rough.

After that I was still determined to have a wee session in a more sheltered spot, if it even would be. Decided on a mark inside Cork harbour which wasn't as exposed, when I got there it was fishable but the wind and rain was still very heavy. Gave it a go anyway, set up one rod and in it went. The wind made bite detection hard, I was only going to wind into obvious takes or just reel it in every 15 minutes or so. I fished this mark before and only caught small codling, which were bearly noticeable on a relatively calm night.

After the first few mins I got what seemed to be a good knock in amongst the constant shaking on the tip so wound into it but it got snagged. It was tough breaking the line, which took a bit of pulling by hand, but it eventually snapped above the leader knot so I lost the leader, my rig and lead and possibly a nice fish! I was debating heading home at that point because of the weather and frustration of losing my tackle but I decided to throw another reel on, which had leader on it and give it another go since I thought there were fish there. Same set up and out it went. Same thing happened after a few mins, what seemed like a nice bite, struck, snagged! s**t!

I thought then, maybe it wasn't meant to be tonight! I sat back in the car, ready to go but remembered I had all this bait, drove a long way, bad weather and had 'no fish'. So I reluctantly parked the car again as if it was someone else's decision for me to stay and began to set up the rod. So I 'put on leader, rig (pulley) , baited up and chucked it out'. I wish it actually took as long as it did to write it. After a few mins out I had what looked like a decent bite. Lifted into it and wound in, at least it wasn't snagged this time, I felt a bit of weight on it. It turned up a nice enough 42cm codling .

I set up a 2nd rod with a 2 hook flapper when the 1st went back in the water. Shortly after I had another good bite and another nice 43cm codling on the 1st rod . Then I had a small 30cm codling on the 2nd. Follwed by the biggest of the session, a 45cm codling on the bottom flapper on the 2nd rod . Fish got smaller after that with a few around the 25cm mark. I wasn't taking out the camera in that weather so I just took a few pics of the best ones on my phone. I packed up around 1am, although soogy at least I had a few fish after all the effort. I'll be back out soon...

jeysus tom you had it all stacked against you from the get go . sounds like one of my trips lol . fair play for sticking it out and getting some nice codling thow . still bigger than any codling i've ever caught . so fair do's man

Even after your loss it was still a great session, I got to admit I don't mind fishing in the rain but the wind is a big no for me, fair balls to you for sticking it out.

You were rewarded for you persistence and rightly so too. Some great cod there mate and fair play to you for sticking at it, in what must have been very poor conditions.

I did alright, and just back from a wee session on an beach tonight as the weather allowed it and I had plenty of bait, better conditions all round but as these things go, blank

yeah as I said in the report I had caught just small codling there before so I was thinking I wouldn't even see bites with the wind which is the exciting bit for me. Too much wind usual puts me off too.

Yeah defo Ray, still keen on giving it a good go. Went down there tonight just before high and stayed for 2hrs. If I hadn't to be home I would have stayed a bit longer but sure I gave it a go. Surf was pretty big. Not sure if I was amongst the fish as I was casting out a bit. There was a bit of weed about too. As I said I could do with a few pointers as I just dont have the confidence on the beaches. I always think i'm doing something wrong. Give us a shout next time anyway and hopefully it will work out better.

Yeah I'll give you a shout when I get things sorted. I will find out the damage to the pocket tomorrow and hopefully I will have it back soon after. Had a wee feast alright. Tried a new recipe i never tried before the next night, pretty nice, here it is... worth a go

I was out myself on Saturday for a few hours, according to the Windguru site the winds were supposed to slacken on between 6 pm and midnight - I think they actually got stronger Where I was fishing was wild enough but knowing where Ray likes to fish I say it was crazy. I was packing up and reeled in the second rod to find a 44 cm bass on the end I didn't even know it was there as the wind was knocking the rod tip so much. Of course I had to stay for another hour and a half after that

So I wasn't the only nutter out and about so. I was on magicseaweed and it said the same thing, thats why I was out in the first place. It said the wind would die down and change direction from 6pm but as you said its seemed to pick up Maybe it was the calm eye of a storm they were predicting and it just missed us putting us close to the centre were it is strongest ha! ha! not likely but thats my explanation. Congratulations on the bass anyway
