East cork 14th jan 2011

Fri Jan 14, 2011 11:19 am

People: Me at first and seanie35 later on
Time: 18.00 - 22.00
Tide: High at 23.34
Bait: Razor and black lug
Rigs: 3/0 pulley pennels
Weather: Very foggy and a small few showers but cleared later to be a nice night
Results: Pb codling

Hit the mark at 6 and had two rods fishing big lug baits by quarter past. I got into a fish after about 10 minutes. I landed a small codling, the first of many i hoped. I only had one more small codling on the lug. The razor was after just about thawing enough to bait up at this stage so i switched one rod to a full razor bait. The weed was coming on heavy at this stage and was pulling my line way up tide. I lifted the rod to wind in and clear the weed when i felt it fighting back. The fish managed to get into the tide and gave me a fair scrap. When he surfaced i was delighted to see the size as i knew he was a pb. Got him in, weighed, gave him a knock on the head and carried on fishing. 3lb 5oz on the scales, it was a new pb. I was delighted. Shortly after seanie35 turned up and got fishing too and we had a grand chat, sound lad and i greatly appreciate all his help. I hooked another fish soon after and landed a long but very skinny whiting that was badly hooked so i threw him in for the otters that were hanging around under the pier. I had another nice bite a few minutes later and got the fish up to the surface, another nice codling. Then he gave a kick, spat the hook and disappeared. I left my bait scraps with seanie and headed for home. Brilliant night in my books. I don't think i'll ever be able to face fishing cobh or da wall again.

Congratulations Evan on your new P.B :D that's a fine codling, a fish to be proud off. It's good to see the razor working it's magic, I do harp on abit about what a good bait it is but it's justified I think, it's top stuff.
It was great that you got to meet up with seanie as well, when it comes to fishing, espicially cod and bass the guy knows his stuff and as you said, really sound as well 8)
Great report and pictures, nice one.

Well done that's a good plump fish.
I have noticed that lately some of the cod from Youghal are a lot plumper than the fairly skinny streamlined ones we were getting before Christmas. The return to milder conditions has probably increased the food supply.

Why bother when Youghal is throwing up good fish.

Thanks paula. I find the razor a very good bait alright. I use it alot at this time of year when there's no peeler around. Can't wait to get out again.

I was in a fair bit of pain by the end of the session but i couldn't have cared less. 40 euro for the chiropractor ontop of bait and petrol prices, still worth it.

The weed was bad for a while but cleared a bit so it wasn't too bad. Those codling know how to use the tide to their advantage though. They put up a fair scrap.

Well i hate fishing the wall so that was just an odd time during the day but cobh was nice and handy for me. 15 minute drive as apposed to over an hour to youghal. I go straight from work so i get caught in the worst of the traffic and adds more to the journey. All time i could have a bait in the water. But i've decided to trek a bit further afield this year in search of better fishing so i'll make the trip down a few more times.

No probs seanie. The fish do look a bit better with a lower jaw. Myself and my dad had a fine fish supper last night so it's not only me that's greatful for the help. There was a few heavy showers on the drive home alright so i didn't think you'd stick it for much longer. Petty you didn't get a few good fish for your troubles though.

Thanks. As soon as seanie gave me a few pointers via pm i was on the road. Seeing his recent success i took all his tips on board. And it worked
