West Waterford Bass - 14th October 2010

Fri Oct 15, 2010 12:25 pm

People: Me

Duration: 6.00 - 8.00 pm

Tide: HW at 11 pm

Weather: Light northeasterly breeze, overcast

Bait: Lures

Rigs:

Results: 2 pollock, 1 bass

Report: As the weather had been calm for several days I headed out for a quick lure session. I tried a new location, one that I had intended to fish this year but never got around to it due to a sore foot all summer.

The tide was still very low when I got there, but that gave me the opportunity to check out the various gulleys and overhangs where bass are likely to hang out. As the water was shallow I fished surface lures, mostly various patchinkos. Close to dusk the pollock began to come in close - I had numerous pollock try to grab the lure but most missed apart from one small fish. As the light was going I was fishing into a gulley and something made several attempts at the patchinko close in - I presumed it was just another pollock. Then suddenly there was a big splash and the fish was hooked - it was obvious that this was something more substantial than the small pollock that had been after my lure earlier. It was putting up a good fight and tried to pull to the right to get in amongst the rocks. I eventually got it in close and onto the rock platform. It was a well fed 48 cm bass :D :D :D :P :P :P

As the tide was rising I had to move back so couldn't continue fishing into the same gulley. I moved along the shore and tried several likely looking spots. However, it was dark at this stage and I didn't get any more bites apart from another small pollock, again taken on a patchinko.

It's definitely a mark I will return to - but I reckon it will fish better higher in the tide, ideally with dusk about two hours before high tide.

Well done Frank :D I knew it wouldn't be long before you had another report up with bass in it. That was another great session you had. The patchinko I think is a great lure, it casts really well. It certainly didn't take you long to suss the new venue out. It's always a good idea to go to a new place like that which you haven't been to before at low tide, it gives you the chance to have a good look about the area when it is uncovered from the tide and gives you the opportunity to suss out if there are any gulleys and deep channels present as it's in them places that the fish are more than likely going to be located feeding or sitting at once the tide starts to flood. This then gives you a more accurate idea of what the best place or direction is going to be to cast your lure or plug over. Great report and pictures as always.

It's a patchinko - a surface lure.

It does indeed - It casts about twice the distance I can get with most other lures (Tide Minnows, etc), great for getting out beyond the edge of shallow reefs.

We wont talk about this weekend then   The calm conditions looked good for lure fishing but with the slack tides the fish were just not playing ball. I met a few anglers over the weekend an nobody was having any success
