I've been sea angling for a little over 5 years now , so after maybe the first year / year and a half of getting my bearings and getting settled , you could say I've wanted to catch a bass for about 4 years . Disapointment was never a big factor more determination than anything because I always enjoy being out , catching something ( sometimes nothing ) , having the craic , finding marks and meeting folk .
Last Wednesday I was up at 5 to hit the beach , new rigs tied , heap of bait , new line on the reels . Result ?? Nothing .
So on Sunday (3/10) I fell out of bed and rolled onto the beach with something niggling my brain , oh that's right - one of my reels is fecked . Well I put out the other rod into what seemed to be perfect conditions for bass and decided I'd chance the fecked reel as it was too good to be fishing at 50% .
No perfectly presented baits going out today , I launched a pulley rig with the last sessions sand eel on it freshened up with a new one.
Meanwhile Dougie had landed on the beach with the lads from Total Sea Fishing and David Gray so I went over to say hello and borrow a reel from Doug . When I reeled in the good rod setup I found that I must have got buried in the sand and my line snapped

So over to the fecked one , nothing felt unusual , winding in I saw something amongst the waves , being the pessimist that I am my initial reaction was " It's a mullet "
Well I'm winding in and the reel is crunching and grinding , skipping and spluttering , I'm all the time walking backwards and letting the tide help me , I finally was certain it was a bass but it wasn't until I had it 3 or 4 metres up and away from the surf that i let the lads know what I had caught .
Doug and Roger drove up to me to see what the commotion was about, I almost met them halfway with all the jigging and dancing I was doing.
A little while later i looked down the beach to see Doug holding up a bar of silver too I thought " Bugger , he's gone and stole my thunder

" but Doug had caught a sea trout , the other lads had a few flounder but nothing else for the rest of the day
