The Wexford Bass that disappeared in 10 minutes

Mon Sep 27, 2010 10:13 am

People: Me, myself and I.

Duration: 6 hours

Tide: Out and then starting to come in.

Weather:Lovely

Bait: Mackrel, squid and rag

Rigs: two and three hook flappers

Results: Pollack and Bass

REPORT:
Decided to head down to one of my favourite fishing marks in Wexford on Sunday.
Set up two rods at about 11am at low tide using rag, squid and mackerel. First hour was slow, as I expected. Then at about 1.30am the near rod took a rattle and I pulled in a small Pollack around a ½lb on the mackerel bait.
An hour later, I decided to lob out the small rod into the bay with squid on. It wasn’t in the water more than five minutes when it took an unmerciful bend and line screamed off the reel. The line darted hither and thither for the next three or four minutes. I was getting worried that my knots might not hold up to the strain. I eventually calmed the savage beast and began reeling in line.
As it broke the water I saw a nice silver bar, slowly come to Daddy, and hauled him up onto a few steps on the pier. Fished on for a while after until finally finishing with naught else to show until about 5pm.
Rang the missus back at HQ and told her to have the batter mix ready. Got home, weighed in at 4½lb, took a pic and began filleting. Lashed it into the deep fat fryer and by 8.30pm we were sitting down to a nice plate of fish and chips. It disappeared in ten minutes.

It was grand eatin'. And to top it off, the missus volunteered to clean up the dishes after. Happy days.

Ah no. I usually, sprinkle with pepper and squirt a bit of lemon juice on it before wrapping it in tinfoil and bangin' it in the oven at about 180 degrees for about 20 minutes. Usually falls off the bone.
However, on Sunday, the missus said she fancied a bit of a one and one.
