donegal beach mark 21/09/10

Wed Sep 22, 2010 1:55 pm

People:me and brian

Duration:8am-1pm

Tide:droping

Weather:strong southwest wind

Bait:macs, sandeel, squid

Rigs:2 hook flappers

Results:loads of tiny turbots, flounders, single colie

Report:hit a new mark on tusday morning expecting a good size turbot, strong wind was blowing directly in the face so fishing was hard for the start as weeds pulled ours lines across the all beach
conditions werent great but small tiny turbots seems didnt slept too almost every cast prodused a small fella
for the first start have used fresh mac and squid freshly cought by brian evening before to see what feeds on beach also had some sand eel kept them for big turbot but they didnt work even small ones wont take them
as tide was almost slack some nice flounders appiered manage to cath around 10 between us and some bit bigger turbot but still not a plate size
anyway i was happy enough to cath first turbot in my life and add new spiese in my list
hopeing next time will get big ones if the weather not stands in my way

Well done grady on the new species and on getting a few turbot :D It sounds like the conditions in which you where fishing in where awful (wind and weed, nightmare!) and so I am glad that your effort paid off for you with a few fish caught during the session. Great report and pictures.

Always nice to get a new species, theres been plenty small flounder and turbot all over donegal lately, very little over 30cm, but there has to be a few bigger ones about, mabey we should be adjusting our bait and hook sizes to target them specifically.

cracking result man :D :D 8) . i know it might be a bit late to remember just now,, but that second pic looks like you might have a turbot and brill   . the only positive way to say for sure is if you can remember if one was bumpy and one was smoothe :!: . the turbot are covered in little bumps called tubercles which you can easily feel if you give them a rub, but the brill are almost identicle apart from this feature as they will feel smoothe to the touch and not bumpy.. just a thought in case you're robbing yourself of another species to add to your list man :P
