Mullet & Seatrout Sessions on the Lough's - September 2010.

Tue Sep 14, 2010 5:07 pm

People: Me and K2

Duration: A few sessions over a few days (see dates below)

Weather: Mixed

Methods used: Float set –up & bottom rig

Bait: Bread & worms

Tide: Various

Results: Seatrout, Mullet & Flounder

Report

It’s almost that time of year again when you start to think about packing away the spinning rods and the lighter fishing gear that you have used all summer and start to get the bigger/heavier rods and reels prepared and ready for some sessions over the winter.
But before the dark winter nights are well and truly upon us and while the weather still remains quite good ,over the past few weeks K2 and I have managed to squeeze in a few more sessions at the mullet while we can as well targeting Seatrout for abit of sport and variety.

Wednesday 1st September 2010.

A couple of weeks ago K2 reached a target he was aiming for this year.......he caught his 50th fish (mullet) of the season. A milestone in what has been a great season for him at the mullet. It has taken him just over six months to achieve this, from back in March to now and after putting in alot of time and sessions he deserves it and I am really pleased and proud of him. He has since passed that total and continues to show me up as he has done all year! It was caught again using bread as the bait and using a light float set-up. It was caught almost right on high tide from a mark in Strangford Lough that both of us have fished regularly this year. A picture of K2 with his 50th fish can be seen below................

Monday 6th September 2010.

In the morning K2 headed to a mark in Belfast Lough for another mullet session. He arrived and fished it 2 and a half hours before high tide. Conditions where good, with light winds and so without delay he got his waders on and his rod ready and started to fish. There was quite alot of fish about and they where feeding well on the bait he threw out for them. It was an enjoyable session during which he managed to catch two fish, each of which he released back in. He fished it for a couple of hours up to high tide and then went home.

Tuesday 7th September 2010.

K2 headed back to the mark in Belfast Lough where he had been to the days previous for another go at the mullet there. Again, he fished it a couple of hours before high tide. There was a few fish about today but not as many as yesterday. He had to work harder to get those that where there to feed but eventually his patience paid off and he hooked into and caught another fish. Being out in deeper water wading, the fish was able to run quite alot and so gave him a good scrap before he managed to land it. He then released it back in to fight another day. Things after that went quite quiet and so he packed up and headed for a rock mark near home to float fish for mackerel as we need some for bait for the rays when we go on our trip down to Co. Kerry soon. He managed to catch 11 but it was hard going, the mackerel fishing everywhere has been slow compared to other years and so we were pleased to get a few for the freezer.

Saturday 11th September 2010.

I joined K2 today since I had a couple of days off work for the weekend. We headed to Strangford Lough to fish. I brought worms with me and decided that instead of targeting the mullet that I would give the Seatrout a go instead just for a change to see what was about. K2 fished for the mullet to start with while I fished for the Seatrout on the bottom using a simple rig with worm. To start with I kept getting pestered with crabs which where stripping my bait much to my annoyance but after that I did manage to catch a few small flatties which kept me entertained. Nothing very big but I was just happy to be catching something and was enjoying the day out. A short while later and with not many mullet showing, K2 joined me at the spot I was fishing and he too decided to change over and have a go at the Seatrout as well. He fished using a float with worms and after getting a couple of flatties himself he hooked into what was to be the only Seatrout caught on the day. A picture of his Seatrout can be seen below..........

Image

Not the biggest one he has caught this year but still, it gave him a nice wee fight, jumping out of the water a few times trying to get free before I had it safely in the net and landed.

Sunday 12th September 2010.

Another day.......and yet another mullet and Seatrout session on the Lough for K2 and I. Again, today, K2 opted to fish for the mullet to start with while I fished for the flounder and trout. We arrived and fished as the tide was flooding. Within ten minutes of starting to fish, K2 had struck into and caught yet another nice mullet.

Image

This one give K2 a better scrap than most and by the time it was in the net and landed he had began to tire abit while the fish I think could have went on for alot longer. It was quickly and safely unhooked and released back in......

Image

10 minutes later, he got another great bite and another fish was on but he lost it sadly this time. I fished with the worm and caught more flounder, again, nothing very big but good sport all the same. We fished for a couple of hours or so and then headed home.

Thankyou very much. It was great to get out again but you can notice now that it is getting colder which will effect the mullet fishing soon enough, so we're trying to get as many sessions in while we can before it ends for the year.

Well done to you both, great fishing and a great report. You're both certainly getting a fair bit of fishing in recently and more importantly getting the results for your efforts. :D

Great report - and well done to K2 for surpassing the 50 mullet mark.
I must have a go at the sea trout - recently I was fishing an estuarine mark and there were lots of them leaping out of the water.

Things after that went quite quiet and so he packed up and headed for a rock mark near home to float fish for mackerel as we need some for bait for the rays when we go on our trip down to Co. Kerry soon.
Good luck on your Kerry trip.

Date: Wednesday 15th September 2010.

Location: Strangford Lough

Results: 2 Flounder & 1 Seatrout (My first of the 2010 season!) :D :D

Report

K2 collected me from work last night and we both headed back to Strangford for another go at the seatrout and mullet.
The weather was fine apart from abit of wind blowing but it didn't efffect our fishing which was great. We arrived at low tide and fished for a few hours.

I fished for the seatrout again using worms. I was hoping to finally catch my first one of the year. I got bites on the worm almost straight away and firstly caught a couple of small flounder. It still amazes me the size of bait that some of the smaller ones can get in their mouths, they are such greedy wee things.

After about half an hour or so into the session I got what was a better bite, so I lifted my rod and struck into it and right away I knew it wasn't another flounder. As I reeled in the fish appeared on top of the water and I could see that it was a seatrout :D my target species!
Although not very big, this wee fish gave me a good fight, leaping and jumping out of the water several times before I got it landed. I took a quick picture of it and then released it back in. I was well happy, my night was made.

I down sized my tackle this time for abit more sport using a shorter rod and I am glad I did, the crack I got when the fish was on using the lighter gear was brilliant! 8)

My first Seatrout of the Year

Image

K2 fished for the mullet again but he didn't manage to catch anything on this occasion. There was very little fish present, perhaps the cold spell of weather has something to do with it. We're going out tonight again and I can't wait.

Although I still love my mullet fishing, the trout have me well and truly hooked and I will be trying to get another one before the season ends.

Thanks Brian 8) Although I still love the mullet, I have to say that fishing for the seatrout was brilliant and made a really nice change. I will definitely be doing it alot more next year. I meant to try for them sooner this season but we have been too pre-occupied with the mullet all summer and now I am running out of time. The flatties where good fun too, they enjoyed my worms that’s for sure!

Thanks Thomas. It won’t be long before the mullet season ends for another year :( you really must try and get yourself down with us again for a session. Getting my first Seatrout of the season last night was great. It was brilliant, the fight they give you is amazing as you know only too well yourself. What in your opinion from catching both do you think fights harder? A mullet or a seatrout? I would love to catch both a trout and a mullet of similar size and compare the fight both give me to see which one I think fights harder between them.
I’ll be fishing for the trout more often next year that's for sure, on the light gear it was great crack!

that's a hard call Paula mullet v sea trout. each has there own style of fighting but say 3lb mullet may take longer to get to the net than a ST of the same sort of size.. think mullet are more doggett close to the net

Thanks Dave 8) We have got out a fair bit over the past couple of months alright, it beats sitting in the house anyday :D The mullet have been great crack. Now the seatrout have started to intrigue me too. I haven't really ever targeted them that much before but I will be more next year for sure, they are brilliant and have gave me something else to target over the summer rather than just the mullet all the time :D

Thanks Frank :D The mullet fishing we have done has been great but we both still love our bass fishing most of all. It's been ages since we fished for them back in May this year and the withdrawal symptoms are terrible  Reading your reports has just made me feel even worse!! Do give the seatrout a go, they are brilliant fun. The fight they give you, even the smaller ones is something else, if you haven't went for them before then do, you would enjoy it.....a small spinner would be ideal for where you are describing and I know that would interest you as you enjoy your lure fishing. Hopefully our Kerry trip goes well, when we eventually get there.......the razors are well stocked up in the freezer ready to go.

FisherKing wrote:Well done guys :D great report & pics Paula 8) I must give the Mullet another go soon before their gone

Thanks Brian :D There's not much time left for us to fish for the mullet :( soon it will be too cold and too dark at night to go out for a session. I''ll miss it over the winter but next season will come around soon enough. Hopefully you get out again yourself for a session before they go. It's coming to that time of year when we get the beachcasters out and our heavier surf rods to go out fishing for some winter species which we are looking forward too. Good luck and I hope you get your double figure pollock sooner rather than later mate

Thanks Rob  There's not much time left so if your free anytime over the next couple of weeks we must get out for a session again......remember, your not going to let that swim beat you! The seatrout have been good crack, bring the fly rod and have a crack at them even. If not then we'll all get a run up the coast as I said with the bigger rods and see what's about. I'll be in touch 8)

Hhmmm.........it's a hard call alright.Yes I agree with you when you say that the mullet are more doggett close to the net. I'd say myself that mullet would fight harder than seatrout but that's just my own opinion.

Cheers grady mate :D I was well happy at getting the seatrout. :D The mullet season has flewn by, I hate to think how many sessions we've been out on fishing for them. I have loved every minute of it even though at times they have driven me completely nuts!!

Cheers Rob mate 8) I was well happy with getting my first seatrout of the season. I thought I had left it too late and so was well pleased to get it. I went out and tried at the weekend again to get another one but I had no joy. K2 however caught yet another mullet during yesterday morning’s session. It was hard going though, there was hardly a fish about.

Cheers razor :D Ha! Simple is not a word I would use to describe mullet fishing, they have driven me mental all summer I can tell you but thanks. I can't wait to go bass fishing again 8)
