Report: all summer me and me da have been trying to pull a conger out of the water at blackhead lighthouse and to date we havent even had so much as a sniff over 4 or 5 sessions. Determined i arranged to meet him there, he had was already starting to make excuses but i twisted his arm. since he was running late i headed up first on my own for a spot of spinning till it got dark. when i arrived there were 2 other guys there spinning for polock and mackerel and had been for the last 4 hours with nothing to show for it. feeling a bit daunted by this i gave it a go anyway and after about 45 minutes with nothing i packed it in. stick on a 1 hook bomber and tossed it out about 5 feet with a wee bit of mackerel on it and was getting bites straight away. wasn't long before i was pulling out pollock and colefish and a single wrasse, all less than 1lb but blank saved
dad arrives about 830, sits down and starts complaining. "what are we doing here, this is a barran wasteland, we arent going to catch any conger etc etc". told him to shut his face and gear up so he stuck out a 2 hook paternoster on the bottom and wasnt long before he got a cracking thump. unfortuately due to his inability to tie a knot on braided line the knot slipped and lost the fish. didnt really do much for his attitude ill tell you what. he stuck on another trace, cast out, turned his back to his rod and then sat with his bottom lip tripping him. he did even through out his conger rod. decided to ignore him best i could so put out his conger rod for me so i would have 2 on the go. 1 minute athe bait on his rod hit the water i got a run and manage to pull out a wee dog fish. once on the rocks i realise i hadnt actually hooked it as it was just holding onto the bait...mustve really wanted that bit of mackerel. so off it went and suddenly dad wants to fish again. my conger bait had been my conger bait had been sitting untouched since i arrived and i was now about 9pm so reeled in to check for crab damage. though it was snagged but soon felt it fight back and brough in a wee 4 and half pound conger. once photos and my "ive just caught a conger" dance were out of the way it was safely released. shortly after dad got another run but got excited and hit it to early. fought it for about 30 seconds then it spat the bait. another bait goes out and with 10 minutes he gets another run. manages to hook this one and it come in at 8 3/4lb. by about 10 my bait still hasnt moved so go to reel in and it starts fighting back. another conger come in at 7lb. did my dance again and let it go. that was both conger i caught not giving me even a single click on the reel. bait back out and half hour later i get another run. seems like a good definite one to but im smoking a fag so decide to finish it first and then hit it. left it a bit to late as soon as i hit it i got three bit pulls and then it went solid. kept pressure on it for abot 10 minutes until the line parted from rubbing on the rocks. over the course of the night we had another half dozen runs where the fish dropped the bait (probably dogfish) and on the distance rods i got 1 single tiny pouting and dad got nothing but to be honest we werent really paying those rods any attention.
cracking nights fishing, and now i know i can get me da out there again without the attitude this time.
and ill tell you what. that long walk back to the cardpark doesnt seem so long when youve actually caught something
