People:myself,tight lines,gitsea M

Duration:a long time

Tide:all stages

Weather:misty and sunny

Bait:rag,mackerel,sand eel

Rigs:various

Results:conger, mackerel, pollack, rockling, pouting, maybe the lads had more species that I have forgotten about

Report:got a pm about fishing achill from tight lines so headed up Saturday morning,I left clifden at 9:00 and it only took 3 hrs to travel 70 miles   every tourist with a caravan and every farmer with a trailer were out in force  :roll:had a quick stop at the shorething in Westport for a bit of tackle and bait, got some great information from Doug about fishing around Westport,I finely arrived on achill and met up with the lads,it was nice to meet gitsea M for the first time
we headed of to the first mark,a bit of a walk down hill to get to it,first target fish for myself was conger so set up a trace and put it out and then tried some feathers for pollack and mackerel,i had a good conger bite but he went to ground and would not move,I spent 20 mins trying to get him out until the line snapped, the lads had a few conger bites as well and some nice pollack
we decided to head for a bit of grub and to another mark, the walk back up hill nearly killed me  must remember to take some of the lead out of the tackle box and stop smoking

we stopped for a bit of grub, gitsea M makes a lovely cup of tea, thanks for that,it went down well after the hill climb

we headed of to another mark which was about 20 walk from the car but thankfully no hills
when we arrived I put out the conger gear again, the lads started to land fish very quick but it must have taken me 2 hrs or more to get a bite,I thought I was going to blank
first fish for myself was a mackerel so blank saved then I started to get bites on the conger rod but most had gone to ground before I got to the rod,I got one good bite and started reeling in,it felt very heavy but it didn't feel like a conger,I thought it might be a good size ray but close in the fish came off but I had a rockling on the hook that had a bite taken out of him

it looks like he was caught in a net or line for awhile as well, the rockling was my fist this year :D :D
had a few more bites on the conger rod but lost them all, when I ran out of conger traces it was time to try for some other species so I baited up a set of feathers and cast out and shortly after got a bite and after a bit of a fight landed my only conger of the day which was nicely hooked on the feather,Alan had it unhooked before I had time to take a photo of the feather, the conger weighed 4lbs

had a few more mackerel and pollack before we had to leave as it was getting dark and we had to walk 20 mins back to the car

I said goodbye to the lads and hit for home at 22:00 thinking I would have a nice quick run but it took 3 hours again, loads of people out running with head lights and cars with flashing lights behind them
pity about the slow driving but I definitely will head back to achill for a session again

I'll be back from Carrigaholt same week Thursday evening, if you's wouldn't mind giving me a shout I'd be glad to join the craic, hope I'd have enough of fresh mack bagged for all of us by then...

its a good thing the mist was hiding most of it as it would have been a lot worse if I could have seen what I was climbing
