Me and son [doggy dave] both new to saltwater until recently, drove past larne on the coast road, looking for a mark to fish. It was about 4 hours before high tide. We seen a carpark/picknic area beside a small concrete boat launch jetty. We fished from the rocks beside jetty, which was probebly daft as we were casting into kelp, or seaweed. But we soon got bites, and both of us landed doggies, and had good sport. But the constant loss of tackle made us decide to move elsewhere. We backtracked to portmuck. First time we ever fished there. The sun was shining, and it was a beautiful busy place, but fishing was poor. I tried both bottom and float with no luck. Doggy dave fished bottom about 20 yards from me and hooked a couple of fish, only to get snagged and lost on the way in. We both enjoyed the day's fishing. We fished for a half hour after high tide and got home to catch the second half of the match on sky. The bait was mackrel, sandeel and squid.

hi billy. the ledge over the wooden steps usually fishes well at portmuck. althow a float set up is pretty much an essential piece of kit. bring a bag of rag and you'll have a great day's sport man

. plenty of coalies, pollock and wrasse too if you set your drop long enough. and if you're there as darkness sets in and you hear the odd splash from just in front of you, get a small sand eel on the hook below the float pronto as that means the sea trout are about and they do'nt often turn their nose up at a sand eel

Yep al, i fished the ledge with float, probebly at about 10ft depth mainly using squid and sandeel, but no joy. A bloke gave me a few rag when he was leaving and tried them with saneel. Will try there again, and fish deeper,
cheers billy
