Tide:started high but dropped off

Bait:Rag, Mack, Peeler

Results: me - 9 Doggies, 1 Codling, numnum90 - 12 Doggies, Jaff - 9 Doggies, 1 Codling (hook through the trail)

Report: Only our second time out and we decided to give night fishing ago as we heard results tended to be better and the reports were right. From the first cast we were pulling in fish. I know Doggies for most people are a pests but as beginners we were just happy that something was biting. Although we still didnt feel that way by the end of the night
Mack and rag was bringing in the doggies so I decided to give the peeler crab a try and caught my codling with my first cast but then after that the crab was bringing in doggies too. By 2.30am we had enough and packet up for home.

Thinking next time of trying some were closer to rocks with deeper waters and hopefully no doggies

Nice wee session there Chenz but dont forget the humble doggie has saved many of us from the dreaded blank.

Good fishing lads. I only started fishing myself about 18 months ago so I know what its like. I caught over 200 dogs before I got another species, so well done on the codling. Dont make the same mistake I did by whacking out baits as far as possible, thinking its all about a big cast, this is sure to get you into the dogs. Mix up your distances a bit, you can still catch fish inside 20 yards, and when this doesn't work whack em back out again, the doggies will save you many a blank in the future.

This is the one fish i caught that wasnt a doggie can anyone confirm that its a codling.

Yup looks like a codling to me alright. Large gob, and small barbule under the chin.

DONT FISH GREYSTONES

Dogfish are a fish that live and swim hard on the bottom pal along with all their cousins. Clean fish are nearly always up a couple of feet of the bottom, and they swim a min of 2- 3 feet up off the bottom, to avoid the dogfish and hopefully catch clean species try popping your bait up off the bottom with the aid of a small polly ball. These balls are used a lot by pike anglers and they can suspend your bait up in the water away from a weedy bottom ect. They will make your bait stand out a hell of a lot more as your bait will be in the oncoming fishes face !!. If you don't need distance which you rarely do I suggest trying float fishing with your bait again set up so it's fishing up off the bottom away from the dogfish. I hope this helps mate......., I'm happy so long as I catch a few fish regardless of species type, I return everything I catch so dogfish are not a problem and if they are close in fishing with a light set up and an over depth float can be great fun . If you want to avoid dogfish though and they are around and you don't want your expensive baits like crab being gobbled up by dogfish try the above mate and see how you get on.
