ReportDay 1 – Monday 26th July 2010. K2 headed out to a mark in Strangford Lough that he has fished a few times this year already for another session at the mullet. He got there just before high tide and fished for a couple of hours. He began fishing, throwing bits of bread into the water and scanning his eyes around to see if he could spot any fish. Almost straight away a few fish came up to the surface of the water and began feeding in front of him. Not long into the session and after missing 2 fish before hand, he hooked into his mullet, his reel screaming instantly on contact with the fish as it tried it’s best to free itself from the hook. After a fight of about 7 minutes he got his fish netted and landed successfully. He had no camera with him today because I had it but one of the kids watching him called Jordan took a picture of the fish on his phone and he is going to forward it on to me at some stage. When I get it I will then upload it onto this report.
Day 2 – Thursday 29th July 2010.After fishing the day before but not catching anything but with memories of his fish he caught on Monday, K2 headed back out again today for another mullet session. He fished one mark first of all for an hour or so but there wasn’t too many fish about and so he decided that there was no point in hanging around and so he moved on and went to another mark further around the coast. He has been ground baiting this mark in several places for the past few weeks and so he was confident that there would be some fish there. He got there an hour before high tide and as soon as he arrives he could see a good number of fish in the water and so his hopes were high for the session ahead. After getting alot of good bites and with the fish feeding well the whole time he was there, all of a sudden his float went down and he struck his rod and it was fish on! After a good scrap lasting 5-6 minutes he netted and landed his fish up onto the bank. He took a couple of quick pictures and released it back in. He fished for another short while and then headed for home.
Day 3 – Friday 30th July 2010.K2 headed out again today to the same mark he caught his fish the day previous. He fished the same state of tide and again there was a good number of fish about. They where feeding well like the day before and not long into the session his float got buried again, disappearing under the water. Again, he struck into the bite and he had his fish on. After a good scrap lasting 4 minutes or so he again netted and landed it. Another couple of quick pictures were taken and it was released. He continued to fish but quickly realised that the rest of the fish must have got spooked from him catching the fish and they virtually all had scattered and disappeared. So, there was no point in staying on and he headed for home.
Day 4 – Saturday 31st July 2010.I joined K2 today as I was off work for the weekend. We fished 6 different marks around the Lough and although we both got plenty of bites we didn’t manage to catch any fish today.
Day 5 – Sunday 1st August 2010.We both headed out today again and fished two marks in total.
Mark 1 – When we arrived we could see that there was a good number of fish about. We began fishing and both of us got loads of bites straight away. I saw a few fish swim up past me, towards where K2 was standing fishing. We both threw bread out to try and get them holding in the one spot for a while and it worked with a good number of fish hanging around in front of us. Next thing I heard a splash and looked beside me to see K2 in battle with a fish. And although in quite shallow water, it gave a good K2 a good scrap. K2 played it slowly until it eventually tired and he landed it. I took a couple of pictures and it was released back in. We then moved on to the second mark shortly after this.
Mark 2 – We arrived almost right on high tide and began fishing. I fished one part of the bank while K2 fished on up abit from me in the area that he has been ground baiting regularly over the past few weeks. I had a few bites during the session but that was really all. After only about 20 minutes or so down I heard K2 whistle and I knew that he must have a fish on and so I ran up to see what was happening. Sure enough when I reached him he was in battle with yet another mullet. He played it gently, until it got tired and then he was able to guide it over to me and it went into the net. I took another couple of pictures and it was released. Approx. 45 minutes later and with the rain coming down very heavily now, K2 hooked into and caught his third fish of the day. Almost straight away he knew it was a good fish the way it took off and after a fight lasting 15 minutes it ran out of stream and I netted it for him. When I set it down onto the grass for K2 it unhook it, it was then that we both could see exactly the size of it, it was a really nice plump fish, a specimen for sure. I took another couple of quick pictures (in the pouring rain!) and iK2 put it back in. We where both really buzzing at this stage, my heart was racing having watched K2 catch 3 fish in one day. We fished on for a short while but once the tide dropped down very low and with all the fish having moved on out with it we decided that was enough for today and packed up our gear and headed for home soaking wet but very happy indeed!
