In the past on occasions I have arrived at a particular beach or mark and have thought to myself that it looked "too calm" to catch Bass from but I fished it anyway and like you I have caught them. It's the beleive of some people that you need a good surf on a beach in order to catch Bass from it and if there isn't a surf running up then it's not worth trying but that's not always the case and what happened to you is the perfect example of this, congrats again, that's a fine fish indeed.
