Strangford Lough Mullet - 13th July 2010.

Thu Jul 15, 2010 5:18 pm

People: K2

Tide: 1 hour before high

Bait: Bread

Method used: Float

Result: 1 mullet 8)

Report:

With the weather forecast not looking too good for the rest of the week K2 decided to go out for a quick mullet session when it was still dry and quite pleasant outside.I was back at work and so I wasn’t able to join him this time :(

He arrived at the mark an hour before high tide, got his gear ready and began fishing.
There was a few fish about but not what there has been at other marks around the Lough that we have fished this year so it was going to be slightly more a challenge than it usually is but that’s what K2 enjoys the most about fishing for mullet, how unpredictable it can be.

Every session/day is different when you go out. Even at a mark you have been fishing regularly can change dramatically, you never know what you are going to be faced with from one day to the next. That’s also the reason why alot of people find it very frustrating and don’t like this type of fishing.

He began by throwing out some small pieces of bread to see if there was any fish about and to suss out if any that where there were feeding or not. A couple of fish hit his bread that was sitting on the surface of the water and so it looked quite promising and positive for the session ahead.
He was fishing for about ten minutes or so and after missing a good bite beforehand he hooked into and made contact with his fish.
And although not a particularly big fish compared to some of the ones he has caught over the past few weeks or so, it still gave him a good fight before he landed it successfully :D

As his personal photographer was stuck in work, he had to take his own pictures this time, which he did before returning the fish back in safely and unharmed.
With a flick of its tail it bolted off and K2 continued on fishing.

After that things went abit quiet with not many fish showing. They had moved up, got pushed further on up the channel with the tide as it approached high water.
He fished on for a while to see if anymore fish where going to make an appearance but they didn’t and so he just called it a day and headed for home.
A short but sweet session was had with yet another mullet caught from the Lough by K2.

He went back yesterday to the same mark and tried for them again but this time using his fly rod, he only got fishing for half an hour when the wind picked up and so he called it a day. He’s going to try it again very soon.

Below are a couple of pictures taken by K2 from the session including one of him fishing the same mark a couple of days previous.

Thanks Brian 8) Yes! being stuck in work can be a real pain  espicially when you keep getting text messages from people teasing you about what fish they are catching   I don't mind being in work when the weather is bad but when it's a nice day all I want to do is get out and go fishing but I can't :( I have to save my leave/holidays that I have for my trips to Kerry later on in the year for the bass so I am afraid it's gonna have to be all work and no play until then apart from when I get the chance to go out at the weekends. And I did manage to get a couple of sessions in at the weekend but sadly again I didn't catch anything :( We fished a few different venues but there was alot of flood water at a couple we went too caused by the recent rain we have had which made the water all brown which ruined the fishing abit for us. However, despite this we stuck at it and K2 should have had at least two more fish but mullet being mullet they had other ideas and went mad until they eventually freed themselves from his hook much to both of ours disguist
I took a few pictures from our sessions at the weekend which can be seen below.

Hi cky, that's one of my favourite marks too  I'm surprised we haven't bumped into each other at some stage there. We fished it on both Saturday and Sunday there past and we seen a couple a big fish swimming about. K2 lost a good one further on up from the seaward side, he had it guided in over to me to net and just as I went to scoop it up it seen the net, went mad, flipped itself over a couple of times and got off. We where so annoyed because we had seen it and knew it was a nice fish  It gave him a really good fight too. I took a picture of him when he was fighting it and it gives you abit of an idea of the fight it gave him when you see how much the tip of his rod is bent over.

Thanks Al, poor me indeed :( Unfortunately I do have hooks on so I can't blame that or use that as my excuse  To make matters worse - I am using the exact same set up as K2 and I am still not catching while he is  seriously, I am on the verge of giving this mullet fishing up and going for something easier – any suggestions

Tell me about it Brian.....it was a nice fish alright which just made us feel even worse than we normally would when it got off!
It was kinda my fault if I am being honest about it, I was too quick and hasty trying to scoop it into the net and as a result I ended up spooking it   the excitement took over me as it always does but I can't help it. These things happen I told myself but I was really annoyed about it afterwards. I was more annoyed than K2 and it was his fish! He might sack me from my job as netswomen if I do it again....better be more careful in future   me and nets just don't make a good team at the minute
