Sorrento Point 12.7.10

Tue Jul 13, 2010 10:17 am

Date: 12.7.10
Time: 7pm - 9pm
Place: Sorrento Point, Dalky
Weather: V. Nice
Bait: Maria spinners, pink flashers, silver feathers, two or three other spinners
Results: Well it was a lovely evening.

As it was a nice evening I decided to bring the spinning rod down to the Rocks at Sorrento. The tide was low but on the way back in so I thought with the calm conditions it might be a productive. Despite my best efforts over the two hours I didn't have a bite. There were 3 other anglers at it and as far as I could tell they caught nothing either. I had spent 3 hours here on Sunday morning and between 11 anglers there were only about 5 fish landed. It's taking a long time for things to pick up. It was a gorgeous evening anyway and good to be out.

On a less positive note, about half an hour before I packed up a Dad and Son showed up. They climbed a Rock between Sorrento and Collimore. The son was about 8 or 9 years old. The dad seemed to be introducing the son to fishing and was taking his time to show him how to cast etc. They were spinning away for about ten minutes and seemed to be enjoying the evening. Then four young but experienced anglers, some if not all members of SAI arrived. They decided to move in behind the Dad and Son and began setting up tripods etc. There would have been very little room on the rock for 3 let alone 6. They stood behind the dad and son in a way that must have been uncomfortable for the young lad. I'm sure they were pleasant and not intimidating but I'm also sure they could have allowed the Dad and son a bit of space and picked another rock for half an hour. I don't mean to offend the 4 anglers involved but a little bit of thought could have been put into it.

I was one of these 4 anglers and as we got to the rock eric and jack set up to the left of this guy and myself and shane actually left our gear down and relaxed untill the chap had moved on , and also you should know that i told him to take his time as we were in no rush as we were only chasing conger so it was a bit early for us at that stage anyway :!: the young lad lost theyre spinner and thats why they left the rock and the father actually was very curtious and said thanks to us and wished us good luck , so im afraid you picked up the total opposite of wat actually happened in your judgment of the situation mate

There were a lot of empty rocks around that you could have waited on. It's never nice to have 4 lads breathing down your neck while you are trying to do a bit of fishing. It can be intimidating even though I'm sure you didn't mean it to be. Just because the dad didn't get shirty with you doesn't make it right. It might just mean he was being polite. If I had my young lad with me I'd have politely asked you to back off for a while.
As I said in my post I'm not trying to offend any of you, just making an observation.

Fair enough masterkeane, but i just wouldn't apreciate 4 chaps standing behind me patiently waiting for me to go, not to mention casting within a overcrowded space, i don't mind sinking my hooks into the 4 but not the other way round. I have a 9-year-old too, i would definitely leave at once if i were in the same situation.

i think your being a bit unfair here. we merely got to a rock and waited until the young lad and his dad left. whats the big deal? we reassured the two to take their time as we were in no rush. no of us even casted a bait until the two left and as john mentioned they only left because they lost their only spinner. would you rather we out wearing hoodies with ASBO wirtten accross it drinking tins and smoking joints. because quite franlky as its coming accross to me your trying to paint us with that particular brand of paint? no harm done so why even mention it in the first place? the world these days seems far to concerned with do gooding and making observations.

Eric, Dennis & John - a truly menacing bunch

Get a grip lads, they literally just sat on a rock in Dalkey??

I'm genuinely not having a go and I think if you read my posts again you will see that. It's a bit like the old pool table situation in a way. If you are playing a game of pool and four lads come along and crowd around you, you get the feeling that your turn is over. It's just a little bit unfair. As I said in my posts I don't believe any of you intended to intimidate them at all but maybe it would have been better to let them finish up before claiming the rock for yourselves. Maybe you're right about it not being a big deal and I mean no offence to you.

Like the lads said before there was no undue pressure from any of us. I went to the rocks well to the left with my feathers so wasnt in their way.

What has been said has been said. No need for this to run on and on.
If anybody wants to post on this one give me a shout.
