strangford mullet hunt fri 25th june

Duration: 10.30pm to 3pm

Tide: HW 11am

Weather: sunny, dry and not a breath of wind

Bait: bread

Rigs: mullet float rigs

Results: 1 mullet for normal at 5lb on the nose




Report: kerry1 and her fella norman have been at us for a while now about opening our mullet account for 2010. finally i had a bit of spare time that fitted in with the tides for a crack at them and a plan was hatched . i met norman at the first mark and the mullet were already milling about so i got set up in double quick time and within minutes we were fishing. the fish seemed a bit timid as the water was down a bit but they had no problems nudging my float with their lips and ignoring my bread . norman got set up about 80 yards to my left and had a couple of takes without any hook ups so spirits were high. but within 30mins the mullet had shot past the mark and moved on up the estuary. norman reckoned we were wasting our time and it would be best if we moved onto another venue. it was a wise move as we arrived at the next mark to see good numbers of them swirling about in some pretty shallow water. so we waded out and started groundbaiting up with some bread to see if we could get them to stay in the one spot long enough to get them feeding. the next 2 hours were sheer frustration,,, the mullet were no more than 5 feet from me and only inches from my float. but had no intention of taking the bread and shot past like torpedos . some of these things were enormous and easily 2 foot long. i could'nt get over the size of these things. i began to see the appeal of this old mullet lark as the fish were so close you could literally reach out and touch them. every time one passed by my heart was in my throat as they took a wee glance at my bread but decided better of it . finally about a dozen of them moved towards us in a big boiling ball and norman plopped his float smack bang right in among them. i honestly thought it would have scared the beejesus outta them. but as i looked over at norman he was in the process of striking and with one almighty splash it was fish on!!!. i quickly dropped my rod and ran for the net, but i needent have rushed as it gave a very spirited 5 min fight before it tired enough for norman to direct it towards me and it was safely in the net we waded back to a grassy bank and i finally had something worth weighing in my good digital scales. after spending £65 on them and another £24 to have them certified it was nice to finally have a fish worth weighing . as it turned out he weighed in at 5lb on the nose, the biggest mullet i've actually ever held in my hands. i was made up for norman, but now it was my turn. there were loads of them for the next hour or so but i just could'nt get them to take any interest in my bread. and sadly the tide began to rapidly drop off and the mullet soon headed back out to the open sea . so no mullet for me again, but i think i've been bitten by the mullet bug and i'll be back out stalking them soon enough i had a great day and was made up for norman getting one and for taking me out. so mullet you have been warned, beware!!

It sounds like you's had a great day at the mullet, it was a pity that I couldn't join you's but work called for me. When you text me Al to tell me that he had a nice fish I was over the moon and got really excited. And you where right, it is a nice fish indeed.
It's great that you where there with your certified scales so that the weight of Norman's mullet could be confirmed accurately without any doubt. I believe that 5lb is the specimen weight Nice one Norman, I'm made for you!
Hard luck yourself Al, it sounds like they drove you mad, now you know how I have felt all week fishing for them!
We'll both get one soon if it kills us which it probably will do

Nice one guys. We were not too far away on the second mark but had no luck at all, although big numbers of large fish in the water. Couldn't get them to stick around long enough in one place to take a proper interest in any baits, despite throwing a whole loaf at them!!

Yes it can be frustrating but very addictive,you'll know why when you get one on the hook.
Have blanked 4 times this year for them but caught a tiddler one whilst on holidays.
Can't wait to get at them again,see you's around the lough!!

i haven't managed to get out fishing for them this year yet (or much else for that matter). Have a house move soon but hope to get out next month to try for my first one

tell me about it man.. some of them just went snorting by us at speed with no interest what's so ever on feeding. mabey the better tides in the next 2 weeks will encourage them to slow the run down a bit and feed a bit longer

tell me about it don . at least you got a few takes mate. it's had to put into words just how annoying it is to watch a dozen massive mullet swim past your float and attack it and ignore your bread no wonder they look like they're smiling, probably pissing themselves laughing at us

just gotta remember to leave enough time for a beer after every mullet session now to chill out and relax at this rate i'll be adding a stick of dynamite to my essential mullet kit

thanks noel, thankfully all the mullet marks are only 10 to 25 mins from my front door . just think how many loaves i can buy with the money i'm saving on petrol

Not only do they look like torpedo’s but they swim like them too.They are good at nudging your float and ignoring your bread, they done that on me all weekend

Fenton, it was great to finally meet you at the weekend, I knew it was only going to be time before we meet up at that mark. Once you’ve moved house and things have settled down in a couple of weeks for you we’ll have to get you out on that kayak for a go at the mullet in the Lough, it will be great crack.

Actually Noel, I wish it was only 3 -0 but unfortunately it’s 5 – 0 and that’s only counting the ones he has caught up here at home never mind the ones he caught down in Co.Kerry in both March and May. He’s giving me a right spanking with the mullet at the minute!

Was that you Der Baron with a mate out earlier on in the week on the Lough fishing for the mullet? I thought it was you but I didn’t want to go over and introduce myself incase it wasn’t you, that would have been embarrassing to say the least.
