Weather: SW to W breeze, Cloudy humid

Bait: Eel, Squid, Mack frozen

Rigs: Pulleys mainly penels 2/0, 3/0, 4/0

Results: 14 dogs, 8 thornbacks: 4.5lb, 7lb, 8lb, 7.5lb, 3lb, 5lb, 6lb, 3lb

Rampent wreckfish "Best advice is just dont bother.

The shannon is overrated and there is much better thornie fishing in Galway/Mayo.

If it was me I would actually just spend more time in Castletownbere, there is a chance of spotted and blonde ray from the shore down there as well as a lot of other species.

There will probably be a few on here to defend the Shannons "fantasic" reputation but in general it fishes sh1te."

well donre donagh.thats a great catch.i was down that way 2 weeks ago and was told not to fish it.u have proven them all wrong.i know whos advice i will take the next time.i so wanted to catch a shannon thornie.awe well.keep the good reports coming

in fairness to j.p i have seen him fish a certain well known beach in galway in a comp, only to land 7 ray inlcuding a treble ray, a huss and a shed load of dogs. so i would never write off galway. in saying that the shannon is my favourite stretch of fishing coast for animals in the country. its just never dissapointed!

Nice days fishing, the settled weather has given the Shannon a bit of a kick.
As I said in another post the problem with the Shannon is that lads expect to come down for one day and land great fish, some of them get lucky but most of them get demoralised when they find out you need to put a bit of work and time into it.

in fairness to j.p i have seen him fish a certain well known beach in galway in a comp, only to land 7 ray inlcuding a treble ray, a huss and a shed load of dogs. so i would never write off galway. in saying that the shannon is my favourite stretch of fishing coast for animals in the country. its just never dissapointed!

To throw some balance into the mix here without upsetting anyone concerned, opinions are just that, nothing is Gospel.

On reading that report I may head to the Shannon and expect the same, without knowing the exact location or best time to fish the mark I may well blank go home and think it's over rated.

That said if i had all the local knowledge required for such a productive session I would indeed be a happy chap with my catch and believe the Shannon is great.

Galway seems to have a better rep for numbers of fish but the Estuary has a rep for more ray over the 6lb mark. I don't fish Galway so don't know how true that is but certain marks on the Estuary have given some very big ray my biggest is 16lb. Agree with what baitdigger and others say that on the ground info and conditions (SW wind please stay) are all important. I just thought it I'd hop the ball on a fairly general statement for a bit of fun.

ah it is shite to be honest go to galway and wel make do wit our 20 or so fish a session...think il go fishing now
