Ive never dug my own bait before so as an experiment i am heading to the Carrick area tonight to dig some to see how i get on.
as a glutton for punishment i am planning to head to the harbour after to fish with whatever i dig up.
Feel free to make predictions about what i may or may not catch.
will be fishing about 7 till about 1030 or 11
low tide is about 730.
will update this tomorrow with the result and we'll see who was right.
I predict a blank. but at least ill be out of the house

end result
got about 40 lug for an hours digging probably not the most productive digging session ever had but still chuffed as it was my first time
fished carrick harbour from about 730 to 1030. it was a perfect evening. only got 2 bites the whole time. both rods went at the same time and got too small codling about 1/4 pound each. both returned safely
all in all and really nice evening and 2 fish as a bonus

nice...well done!
I havent yet ventured out to dig my own bait. should do so soon.
Lovely looking wee fish. had a couple of even smaller ones from ardglass recently, although these were redder...kelp?

bsloan - red codling yes, cause they live in the kelp.
Those are nice wee codling, you caught them from the harbour? or out into the lough?? What time wer they caught at?
Good going too.

was casting over the wall into the lough
the lights strung between the lampposts dont make it easy
got them about 930 roughly 2 hours after low tide.
there was a guy came down to look and we were chatting
says he was fishing there last saturday night, high tide was about 11pm and he fished 2 hours either side using rag. didnt catch during the daylight but once it got dark he says he caught 17 wee cod like those

well played, nice wee cod!

heard guys fish the side wall along where the Smugglers used to be for them. maybe easier for casting mate. not sure haven't been down for a while

Good report and nice pictures, espicially the last one. And there's you thinking before you went out that you where going to blank - have more faith in yourself

Well done on getting so many worms too, all that digging was worth it as you managed to catch something. Keep up the good work.

aye it was a good night

Wed Jun 16, 2010 8:47 pm
Good luck tomorrow, I hope you still have some worms left so that you don't have to go out digging again

Happy days mate, i must try her some nite. Wer you bottom fishing? No lost tackle or nothing?
Thu Jun 17, 2010 3:23 pm
aye 2 hook flapper and a grip lead
not sure what the bottoms like but i thinks its more muddy that anything else.
didn't lose any tackle but could feel the lead had sunk into the seabed when trying to reel in

if ya fancy a wee session down there some night let me know mate. I knows its not the most productive mark, but if its throwing up some fish then its better than nothing.

where you heading for your conger mate? Havent had many descent this year yet as for codling if you fish over towards the windbreaker you can pick up the odd nice codling on worm mack baits thats worth a try for conger eels aswell.

we have a trip out on the mackerel boat booked first to get a load of fresh bait
will probably either fish the rocks off the top carpark in portstewart, ramore head or the bluepool.
we've caught conger at all those spots before in the past. my brother once pulled one out of portstewart harbour that was so big it took 2 divers to drag it up the slipway and it topped out his scales as they only went to 35lb when trying to weight it but we reckon it was about 40lb havent caught any there since they rebuilt the wall a few years ago though
havent really fished for them this year yet cept for once at blackhead and once in carrick harbour but both times we were using crap grey bloodless mackerel from the fishmongers so caught nout.

ive fished there about a dozen times before always using mackerel or spinning and never caught a thing
first time using worm and i got 2 wee cod
its too nice an evening tonight to be sat in the house watching crap tv so am heading to dig bait about 7 then back to the harbour to fish again untill 11 give or take half an hour
dont expect ill catch much as low tide is 9pm but its still more fun fishing than not fishing
feel free to join me i should have enough bait to share i last time is anything to go by, ill be the one in the green hat
