Lovely, warm evening
Results: Beautifully coloured Ballan Wrasse about 20 or so between us, none of the whoppers we got in the same spot last year but 4 up to about 25cm.
And one red cod!
Such a nice evening, so had to get out fishing, Had to think of a good low tide mark, so googled "low water marks" in Dublin and was directed to to a thread on this site. Sure enough one of the marks I had in mind was listed, and it also mentioned it's "resident" red cod.
So the rag race race was on, ie. to get out of work and to a tackle shop before 6, Rang around, Baumanns in Stillorgan had rag FYI didn't know they had live bait also Tallaght Rod and Gun, Shorter distance to Tallaght, managed to make it in record time and picked up 40 super fresh large rag and 2oz sinkers which wern't too bad for staying out of snags.
After meeting 2 closed roads in Killiney we eventually got to our mark about 8, the usual nudists were have an ould swim so it was eyes left and down onto the rocks. Put out the float first then just dropped the one hooks a few feet away from our own, bites were constant, a lot of baits stripped and missed bites, best not to leave anything dangling for wrasse. Also I think I've worked out the optimum hook size and pattern for these thieves at last.
As the tide turned, bites were frequent and we were landing them fairly regularly, the usual tiddlers, There was too many of us in the same spot to be honest, if there was less we could have move around and winkled out where the big boys are, I know they're in there.
The wrasse wern't interested in the limpets, only taking the rag, we dropped in mack to see if there might be some rockling, scorpion fish and the likes but no takes on the mack.
My mate Rob then landed a funny looking wrasse, it was the exact same colour as the wrasse but......the body of a codling, so this of course must be the "resident" red cod!
Anyways...packed up there as the light faded, went to Colliemore Harbour, we would have been better off going home the amount of tackle we lost, we had mack out for dogs but all we got was other people lost tackle, Im still convinced there is a line of rope or something stretching along there, any sub aqua enthusiasts here that could tell me? Such a bad mark, I shouldve known better. But good to see the wrasse in will have another go at them shortly.
Pic of red cod to follpw
