Portaferry 27/04/2010 Codling, Wrasse, and Coalies

Wed Apr 28, 2010 12:25 am

People: Bingham and Drew

Duration: 7.30pm - 10.30pm

Tide: Low, then Push

Weather: Rain, 20mph Southerly

Bait: Rag, Lug, Mack, Crab, Squid

Rigs: Various

Results:

Bingham - Coalies and Codling to 31cm
Drew - Codling, Coalies, Ballan, Goldsinney Wrasse

Report:

As the time arrived for us to go fishing, the weather rapidly went downhill, but as it was expected we decided to go to the mark anyway. We arrived to find a driving Southery howling and persistant rain.

But on to the fishing.

We got baits into the water and within 5 minutes Bingham had the first Codling on the deck. Nothing big, and it was quickly followed by another 2. Meanwhile I was finding things tough and finally managed a Codling myself.

Next fish for me was a Ballan Wrasse! Which I was really looking foreword to getting my first of for the year! Result! After a few more Codling and the light starting to go a few Coalfish started to show, most of which were in and around the 25cm mark. Then a nice wee surpise for me as I managed another one to tick off the list for the year, a goldsinney! Bonus! 8)

While this was happening Bingham managed a 31cm Codling which snaffled a nice juicy lug bait.

After this the tide started picking up, and weed became a bit of a problem, the fish became more sparse and we decided to pack up and go home when the rain got heavier.

All in all a good night in harsh conditions, certainly worth the effort.

Sounds like a good session in the end. There must be some tide ripping through there!
The bottom pic looks a bit like a corkwing to me. Maybe another species for the list?!

Nice to see the wrasse staring to show drew, hope this is a sign that there will be a bit more daytime fishing to be had for those chaps. Wanna try for all the wrasse species myself this summer.
