East cork, 7th April - odd session

Thu Apr 08, 2010 2:16 am

People:me

Duration:2 hrs

Tide:filling

Weather:clear, no wind at all

Bait:crab

Rigs:2 hook flappers

Results:16 cod, 1 dog

Report:Had crab left over from the weekend, as someone didn't pick up theirs and decided to try for a bass or some flats, as it is April thats what i was expecting.
No one was fishing in the spot i had chosen, so i set thinking it might be a bit quiet.
Wrong.
2 minutes after casting out, i started noticing a few little taps and after reading some of the recent reports i thought i might have a small coalie, i pulled in a double shot of cod in the 30cm range.
This set the tone for the next couple of hours, only had 1 cast with no fish, even the dog i caught had a small cod with it. Biggest cod of the night was over 40cm, chunky, and I'd say it was just under 2lb.
I was very happy with the session, fish every cast, best session since December.

Nice session, well done.
There are still a lot of codling around alright - I was out last night fishing a West Waterford beach hoping for a bass but was pestered with small codling and coalfish. I was expecting them to be gone by now but the water is still very cold. I washed my hands in the sea last nightand it felt numblingly cold

whatever happend to your mate with the rod

never got back to me. i'll ring him

It was non stop, bites every couple of minutes after casting, and it was a very good session

But i'm a bit worried
If there are only a few flats or bass around the next few months might be a bit scratchy compared to previous years.

Those little tommys are everywhere still. The mate Lee (scotsman) had some doubles fishing a small estuary mark for flats last night in less than 5 feet of water. It was kind of cool after releasing them watching them swim around for a while in the shallow water.
