Sat Mar 20, 2010 11:15 pm

People:me & Mr. I.N. Cognito

Duration:3 - 7:30

Tide:was none

Weather:pleasant

Bait:worm & mepps

Rigs:hook & lead shot

Results:2 salmon & 20 wild brownies

Report:
Seeing as the shore fishing is completely w@nk at the moment, myself & Eri... (I mean Mr. I.N. Cognito) went to a river in the wicklow mountains to catch a few trout. We got our day pass for the river and off we went.

Rick balls got into a small brownie early doors and then had a lovely fish close on 2lbs. These were true wild fish, fin perfect & in fantastic condition. We fished all the likely pools for a mile or so before I got a gentle bite and struck into a heavyish weight, it was a salmon of about 3.5lbs caught spinning a worm, rubbish fight, just a few headshakes and rolls on the surface. When I was putting him back he took off at an incredible speed and I thought why didn't you do that when you were hooked you bugger

10 minutes later I caught another of almost identical size in a pool abput 100 yards further on!! Ricko caught a few more brownies and we headed back to the pool where he had his better fish from earlier, as it got dusk i was getting a fish a cast and had 8 brownies in consecutive casts!! Something completely different for the day but most enjoyable & active type of fishing.

Well worth a look at this time of the year, especially on the east coast, anything that pulls back is better than micro coalies & flats!!

From the photos those salmon are spawned out kelts, and they would be physically pretty knackered not having eaten much for several months, and then spawned.
That would explain their inability to put up much resistance.

Good sign for the future to see a few spawners around!

Beautiful trout.
for spent fish they are very silver
not not really, kelts tend to be quite silvery, especially if they enter the river quite late, best indicator is the ratio of head to body..body usually looks very thin compared to the head

Thats done it, I'm going back to my roots and digging out the fly rod again. Wish I'd joined you guys yesterday instead of busting my balls on Morriscastle for fairly scant return. I just love measuring sub 20cm fish.....

Well done on the salmon. We were fishing a river in Wicklow on Thursday could not believe how low the water was especially for the time of year., we blanked so we went to the lake and caught a couple of Rainbows 4 and a half lb and 3lb.

when they are ready to go back to sea they get silver ,all kelts this time of year will be silver, they look like salmon crossed with eels they are that skinny
