Inner Galway Bay 05.03.10

Sat Mar 06, 2010 3:55 pm

People: vinnycorrigan, corbyeire & myself

Duration: 18:30-23:00ish

Tide: HT @ 20:25

Weather: clear dry no wind

Bait: mackerel, sandeel, squid, razor,

Rigs: pulleys and flappers

Results: Thornback Ray

Report: I'd heard of a spot in the inner bay (about 10mins drive away from where i live) that had produced some good Ray fishing in March 2007 so decided to go and suss it out. I can barely remember last week let alone what the weather was like in 2007 but I very much doubt if it was as extreme as it has been this year. With this in mind I wasn't overly optimistic and had myself geared up for my first blank of the year. We all fished two rods each with me opting for a 3/0 pulley and a 3/0 2/0 pennel pulley the lads fished flappers on the patch of sand about 50 yards in front of us and pulleys out further. Nothing at all was happening no small stuff appearing on the lads flappers. At least the crabs weren't that bad with baits coming back after 20min soaks with some trace of the original bait left on them. The lure of a warm pub fire and creamy pints was getting more enticing with each passing minute. The tide had just turned and I said the scent from our baits should get drawn out into the channel feeding the area and hopefully draw something in (attempted to whistle the theme tune of the Bisto Kid  .... i was trying to convince myself if anything   ) We were chatting away when myself and Brian noticed a downward pull on one of my rods, and in came a Thornie was delighted to see him. This re-motivated us and we fished on for another couple of hours to no avail. I'll give this mark a good going over in the coming months over HT & LW etc judging by the ground it should produce some nice Huss when it warms up a bit.
