Carrigaholt Pier, Shannon estuary, 17/1/10

[b]People:Romofa, Adrian

Duration: 14.00 - 18.00.

Tide: Flooding, high at 19.00.

Weather: Mild, SW F4 -5.

Bait: Frozen Mac, Squid.

Rigs: Various; Pulleys, 3 hook flappers.

Results: 1 Thornback Ray, 3 Coalies, 1 Pollock, 1 Whiting - all small.

We arrived at Carrigaholt pier about 2pm and were just setting up when we noticed a school of dolphins no more than 300m off the pier. We reckoned they were shepherding all the fish in the estuary in to the pier  I got one rod set up and fishing and was working on the second when there was a good thump on the first rod. I hauled in a small but welcome thornie, the first fish of the year. Over the next few hours we got a few small coalies, a pollock and on the last cast, a small whiting. No big fish caught, but a grand few hours on a mild January day. A brew from the Kelly Kettle kept the cold at bay.

Regards,

Liam.

Well done 8) sounds like a nice's days fishing. I'm thinking of trying the Shannon the next time I'm down that way. There's a good variety of species to be caught although the rays interest me the most.
