Greystones south beach 14/12/09

Tue Dec 15, 2009 12:19 pm

People:Me and my dad

Duration:7-10

Tide:rising

Weather:cold but not too windy

Bait:lug and mack

Rigs:pulleys and 2 hook flappers

Results:whiting and codling.

Report:We headed out to give the south beach a go to see what was out there. First cast for me resulted in a whiting of about 25 cm which wasnt a bad start :) a few casts later my dad was into his first fish which was also a whiting about the same size as mine. This continued for a good while until my dads rod doubled over 8) he was reeling it in and the rod was bent like hell and you could see the fish kicking. He got the fish in really close and we could see it on the surface of the water  it was sideways and looked lie it had given up but then it went fown again and after a few seconds he lost it  This also happened the last time we were out, does anyone know why this could be happening? the drag was set very tight and it was only a 1/0 hook, I think it had something to do with the drag...anyway we kept getting whiting and i got a codling in the middle of it all which was about 30 cm. last cast resulted in the biggest whiting which was about 30 cm. All in all was a good night and we will be back out again during the week!

Nice session lads,

What was the roll like on the water? i have had fish come off trying to bully them through the waves before you land them, this is maybe what happened? If so just take it a bit handier without giving the fish too much slack and try to use the wave to land the fish rather than bully it through :)

Well done Ian  , most of the codling i've caught lately are only 25cms   ,any idea what the fish was that got away?? By the way, you cant catch a whiting that was about 30cms.Its a very exact science is measuring whiting   ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i'll take it that "about" 30cms was really 29cms,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you see i've caught hundreds that were "about 30cms but not quite",,,i.e. 29cms. A 30cms one is quite something, few and far between, its like staying on the bull for 8 seconds

   Thanks eyes, your right, the whiting was probably between 25-29.999 cm  I must start measuring the fish and keeping record after the new year! havent a clue what the big fish was but my dad just shouted over saying he could see it starting to surface so I ran over and tried to shine the head lamp on him. It was mainly silver from what I could see, either way my dad was pretty sick  thanks again, Ian
