Report: rain, rain and possibly some more rain descended upon ireland this week! our comp was scheduled to be fished in the waterford estaury and everyone knows sea fish dont like fresh water. expectations where not high for a pleasurable 5 hours, not mention the munster closed was fished just around the corner the day before, and they had a tough time of it with plenty of blanks.
well we were wrong. a few fruitless casts for everyone at the begining of the comp did little to settle our unexpectant minds, but donal d dragging a perfectly formed whiting from the copper coloured water certainly did. the game was on. with the rising tide the fish came on the feed. everyone was catching a few, codling seemed to be the most abundant fare. i commenced my second hours fishing with a nice talley of 10 fish, inlcuding some nice whiting. tiping along i added fish steadily to my card including a gorgeous 37cm cod. this was really enjoyable stuff, all thoughts of the weather subsided as we kept our eyes on the fishing. i had reached 15 fish and then out of nowhere they stopped. the lads up the far pegs where still notching up a few fish, it was very disheartning. no matter what i tried it just wouldnt work. i took a walk up the beach only to see fishahlic bring in a treble of two codling, 28cm and 38cm and a 26cm dab on the top snood. i mean come on!
thinks went even worse from then on, 4 casts where missed through a god awfull snag that now lay right in front of me. some of which im convinced had fish on, too add to this what appeared to be a mussel baid was now happily eating way at my mainline. however a good match anlger never gives up persaverance and determaination to get another fish eventually reapead its rewards. this time caught up in the snag, i eventually got it to come and on retrieval i was pleased to see two fine dabs of 23cm and 27cm n the trace, the top snood had snapped, gifted was not the word. the tide was now pushing my gear in a convinient direction away from the rough ground and i began to catch steadily once again eventually leading to a total of 27 fish for 3rd place. phew
