Galway pier 14/11/09

Sat Nov 14, 2009 11:56 pm

People:myself and gara (housemate/bandmate)

Duration:3-9pm

Tide:high - low

Weather:slight wind increasing the whole time

Bait:mack squid sandeel

Rigs:2 hook boom (gara) single hook bomber, three hook flapper (me)

Results:coalfish, poor cod, pollock, corkwing wrasse, codling

Report:
decided to get out of the house for the day so dragged gara out for a wee session.. arrived at pier to see a couple of lads macky bashin and a couple of rods out, but they only caught coalies..

gara set up the spinning rod for himself and i baited it up for him and fishin he went.. and i set up the goldsey with a 525 supermag extra.. nice combo  the bites were there to begin with but nothing taking.. and gara was getting hit ervery cast but nothing was connecting.. so a quick bait change and i cast out the spinning rod and straight away pulled out a nicely formed coalie.. handed back the rod and gara was soon having fun with coalies.. then got hit with a big bang.. another species.. pollock.. nice one too.. quick pic and release and a different bang.. he got a corkwing wrasse.. he was on a roll at this stage as all i was getting was coalies..
as the light faded behind i started getting poor cod and could see gara wanted to get one.. so a quick bait and i cast out to a bit of distance.. 1oz does travel with a wind behind it ... it wasnt long before the rod was bouncing in the stand... he brought the fish in and i noticed straight away it wasnt a poor cod but a rather nice little codling... he cast out again to similar distance and got a poor cod, i changed to a 3 hook set up to try a few different baits to see what would be best bait with sqquid on top mack in middle and sandeel on bottom... cast out and got hit straiight away.. at first i though i had at least two fish, but only turned out to be a very nice sized poorcod.. and gara reeled in another codling... not to be out done i changed to mack and cast out and amidst the poor cod i managed to pull out a nice codling.. the temp started to drop a bit more and the wind was picking up.. as well as very little water to fish in we decided to call it a night..

cant remember numbers of fish caught but we got something like 40+ fish in total.. i think i have him hooked

Nice going iads 8) just a quick question, whats a single hook bomber rig ? I always thought a bomber rig had at least 2 hooks.

Well done steve & friend, that was myself and the daughters boyfriend mackie bashing. only new to sea angling, that was prob my 3rd time out. Should have stayed and watched you 4 a while but the cold had set in by then. We had been to silver strand for a few hours earlier but were blown off the beach with the wind, so we decided to try the pier for a bit. Anyway at least it was'nt a complete waste of time, 2 "coalies" are better than a blank. Maybe next time i bump into you i might be warm enough to actually speak,(need to get proper clothing). Nice to know that there is fish in that location.

Hi noeman64, yeah there was a chill in the air.. you probably couldn't tell but we were wearing quite a few layers.. I was quite toasty warm most of the session,

hopefully see you out and about fishin over the coming weeks, there's quite a few of us that go out regular that are in the local club, your more than welcome to tag along and pick up a few hints and tips...

thanks Steve that would be great, have only been sea fishing twice before, that was up in little Killary (both times). Caught loads of doggies, whiting, coalies and small codling and i was hooked straight away. Would be great to tag along sometime. cheers.
