Report: As I am going to be heading abroad for a couple of weeks from Saturday (work unfortunately) I wanted to get a bit of fishing in this week before I left, but the weather was doing its best to frustrate that plan. I headed out on Tuesday night but gave up after two cast as the weed was so bad. I gave it another go on Wednesday night but tried a different beach. I was expecting the weed to be bad again but the beach was totally clean.
Unfortunately I had no time to dig bait and besides the tides were not great for bait digging - I just had some razor and a frozen mackerel. There was a very good surf, so it looked ideal for bass, although the tides were weak. I baited both rods with razor on the pennel pulleys.
It was quite for the first hour and a half, apart from some small tugs that were most likely flounder nibbling on the bait. Then I had a strong knock on one of the rods that was cast in close, I grabbed it and struck, I could feel a good fish on the end, then the line went slack. I thought I had lost it, but rapidly retrieved in case it was a bass slackliner. Then after reeling in about 10 m of line I felt the pull of a fish - it was still on

It was putting up a good fight in the shallow surf and I eventually landed it - a fairly well fed 50 cm bass
I was hopeful that there might be a few more about but the rods remained motionless. After midnight I decided on a change of tactics and put on a two hook flapper baited with razor and mackerel. Maybe twenty minutes later I had a small knock on the rod with the flapper, I picked it up and could feel small tugs - flounder I thought. I waited for a few more tugs then struck and reeled it in. Sure enough there was a 32 cm flounder on the lower hook baited with razor.
There were no more bites after that. I packed up close to high tide. I was happy enough with that result bearing in mind the bait I was using. Although if I had managed to dig a few big juicy lug earlier I reckon I would have had a few more fish.
