turned 38 on tuesday

, and had planned an evening session, as there was a low tide in darkness but not too late, Mike had dropped me a PM to say he was going out to one of his beach marks, so arranged to meet up there and give it a go - had only ever fished this spot once before around HW in daylight.
Arrived and realised there was a serious gale blowing straight into our faces, so decided to fish just one rod.
Mike had arrived just before me and was setting up. I baited up with mack belly strip on the two top hooks of a flapper, and a bunch of 3 or 4 earthworms on the bottom size 6 hook. and cast out into the breakers,
stood nattering with mike, with the odd potential bite turning out to be big chunks of floating weed, this happened two or three times to each of us , but wasnt too bad.
things were pretty quiet, the wind was harsh and i was slightly regretting that we hadnt hit a harbour or somewhere a bit more sheltered.
the tide really started pushing about 11.30 - 12.00, and I went over to move the rodrest back up the beach, just as i walked over the tip gave a good rattle, and then pulled the rodrest over , just as i grabbed it, I lifted into a fish, and felt a good few thumps, but a serious weight, the thought of Bass crossed my mind for a second - mike has had one at this mark before - but to be honest was thinkin it likely that I had a half decent fish and a big heap of weed on the line,
took a while to bring him in, and mike waded out and got the first look - when he said it was a cracking Bass I nearly S**t,
when it seen us the fish took a bit of a run back to sea and i really got a feel of the power behind him, I was seriously relieved i had the drag set, when i got him into the shallows I -really- nearly S***t at the size of him, and after a few duff atempts managed to lift him up the beach.
mike took the hook out - i can tell ya it looked tiny in that massive mouth - and realised he had taken the earthworms !! happy days!! Mike quickly took a few pics - hard to judge the size - I have have had salmon about the same size that came in about 8lb - tho this fella was broad and deep as well - reckon from looking at the pics, and judging with a tape that he was about 70cm anyone any guess's as to weight??
got him back into the water as quick as i could, and was a bit worried as he was a bit limp, it was sort of hard to hold him gently enough, but i also had images of him floating off into the surf belly up - after only a minute of so he gave a strong kick and was away!!
what a birthday present - only my second bass ever, and the first was a tiddler.
we fished on for another hour - maybe a bit more - I paid a lot more attention to my rod tip i can tell ya!!
with nothing else showing, and the wind horrific - we called it a day.
really pleased - and great to meet up with mike for a session - cheers for putting me on the fish mate
