North wexford beach, 05-09-09

Sun Sep 06, 2009 2:14 pm

People:me, Dave, Neil and Mitch

Duration:6-30pm-12am

Tide:rising

Weather:lovely and mild, bright moon behind the clouds

Bait:frozen peeler, lug, rag ,squid

Rigs:single hook clipped down, pulley rigs, 2 hook flapper

Results:doggies, dabs, flounders, whiting, common smoothounds, starry smoothounds, and a baby tope

Report:Met up with Dave from the site at Jack Whites and headed to the mark.We were set up by 6-30pm and had this beach to ourselves, surprising as it had been fairly busy last week.Somewhere else must have been fishing well on Friday night    . We had fish on our first couple of casts, doggies for Dave and a doggie and a flounder(maybe a plaice?) for me. We were fishing 2 rods each and i had forgotten one of my beach reels and had to use a light spinning reel on the second rod. I put a 3 oz lead on a 2 hook flapper and let it roll around in the surf and i got fish on most casts all night with this, dabs, flounder, whiting, and including my smallest doggie yet, which i thought i had taken a piccie of  , mustnt have pressed the button hard enough  .The light reel was under serious pressure with doggies on some casts. Ger (Mitch) arrived just before Neil and introduced himself to meself and Dave. Nice to meet you Ger  , didnt have much time to talk between the fish and it was getting dusk as you both arrived, but im sure we'll get better acquainted next time  .There were plenty of doggies around and we hoped we would get through them to the smoothies,, if they were around  . Neil was first in with a fine common smoothie (whats new   ), then Ger got in on the act with another common. The smoothies must have been running through us ,,,cos Neil also got another one, this time a starry and i got a nice piccie of the two of them, with their Petzl Ultras and their smoothies(we werent going to be in the dark tonight   ). Then i had a knock on my distance rod and struck. As it pulled back and took line, i realised it was a smoothie and the battle began . I got it nearer shore and handed the rod to Dave for a moment , so that he could feel the power of the fish.He couldnt believe the strength of the fish and quickly handed me the rod to beach the fish. With some help from Dave i landed it and got a pic , then released it. The oul legs were like jelly after that   . Then the smoothies went away and we were back to the doggies and flatties again. It was an hour and a bit 'till they returned and in the meantime Neil entertained us by catching a baby tope and telling us corny jokes     Only joking Neil, your really funny   ,,,,and in a good way  Ger got some more smoothies and i followed up with a common ,a new species for me, the target of 30 is getting closer  Dave was pulling in doggies all night, but unfortunately no smoothies. We came to the opinion that as we were all doing basically the same thing, using the same bait and tactics etc, that as Dave was using a 12.5 foot rod compared to out 15 footers, the extra distance gained with the bigger rods was vital. I'm no great caster,,, but i can get an xtra 20, 30 yds with the 15 footer and that was the difference here i think. The lads left a bit earlier, and myself and Dave stayed till about 12am, then hit the road home. A great evenings fishing , good company, lets do it again soon   .
Dave

It certainly was a great session alright even though I didn't manage to get in on the smoothie action myself and great to meet up with the lads. I was plagued by feckin doggies all night, nearly getting one every cast but unfortunately the smoothies eluded me yet again, :( I reckon I just wasn't getting the baits out quite far enough with my poor casting, so unfortunately the only solution is to buy some more gear  and hopefully I'll have a long rod sorted for next week. Btw if anyone has a ~15ft fixed spool Triplex, K2 or something like that gathering dust send me a PM  Those smoothies are some fish though and the lads caught some nice ones as well, really solid fish and they certainly put up a of a fight unlike the proverbial sacks of potatoes I was hauling in all night. I reckon we'll have to have another or two lads before the smoothies start to dissapear for another year and you never know I might even catch one next time.

If you look close at the pic i can just about make out some white spots so id say hound too.A handy way to tell the difference is if it has prominent teeth or not.

Are you psychic Tony :?:   You got it in one  After 1000 tiddlers I finally caught a few decent fish   .I gave the mark away as a result of a filing error with my photos (thanks again Dodger for pointing it out to all  ) but you know you only have to ask or pm me (i cant tell a lie, never could, have been like that all my life, got me into all kinds of scrapes but thats just the type of guy i am   ). There again , with 2 Petzl Ultras on the beach, i'm sure we would have been hard to miss
