People:just me

Duration:2100-0100

Tide:high water around 1920ish

Weather:clear skies, coldish, no surf

Bait:rag, frozen crab, frozen razor

Rigs:2 hook flappers, size 2 hooks

Results:1 doggie, 1 tiny strap conger, 1 Bass 3lb 15oz

Report:
got the night off from changing nappies so headed out to try for a few Bass and flatties. got to the beach around 2100 to find no surf but also no weed so it wasnt too bad. got set up with 2 rods with razor and rag on one trace and razor and crab on the other.
there was nothin happening for a good while. the crab was getting stripped but the others were untouched. at about 2300 i got a knock on the rod with the crab, lost it on the way in whatever it was and it took the crab with it  . at 2330 i got another knock and landed a doggie.
it went quiet again for a while till i got a savage knock while taking a slash and it was gone by time i got to it. probably a Bass as there was a good bit of slack line from it. at least it was looking better than an hour earlier. a few minutes later i got another savage looking bite and connected this time. i thought i was into a good fish as it was fighting like a mad thing. when i got it onto the beach i was surprised to find it only 55cms and 3lb 15oz. it fought a lot harder than some bigger ones ive had. got him back in to the water and he was gone with a good kick.
it was quiet again for a while and with bait running out i had 1 last cast with crab and razor. i got a few small knocks but couldnt connect with whatever it was. i left it out and eventually hooked into something. it felt small but very lively. i didnt have a clue what it was till it was beached, a tiny little strap conger  . every time i seem to hit this beach with the solunar theory in my favour i seem to land one, all fairly small tho.
bait was gone at this stage except the rag which wasnt touched all night so packed up and left. not a great night but better than nothing and nice to be out. i was a little surprised not to get any flatties as i usually manage a few with worms on this beach.

Well done Red nice fish. The razor is a funny old bait. 8 out of 10 it's not great but then some nights it's all the fish will take!

Always found the smaller/medium fish more lively too. Its more arm wrestling with the bigger ones. True about the nappies problem - but then eventually you have somebody to carry the gear...

yeah, noticed that any of the ones 5lb+ ive had were almost dragged in. best fella i had was only 2lb 2oz and fairly lively, i left off the drag and he was flyin up and down the beach, mighty craic.

mabye its because everyone hates to lose a big one,so no chances are taken with the drag, and the fish is played hard, but when you have a small one you will loosen the drag and have a bit of fun? I know thats what i do(but not with bass as ive never caught one)

not really, (nearly) all my Bass are released(ive kept 2    ) so if ive had 1 or 2 that night im not too bothered about losing 1. the biggest one i had was over 8lbs and if i hadnt seen the huge take id have thought i was hauling in a big lump of weed. it didnt kick till it was on the beach
