Report: headed up for the shore comp at the end of the belmullet festival - sore heads all over the peninsula after 4 days solid drinking. signed in in nalens tackle shop and was surprised to be handed a roll of wire - for way in
this was a species comp - species number would win - and in the event of a tie - it went to weight
things done a bit differently up here!
kevin from the club being a true gent, took me to various spots on the hunt - i had 5 wrasse but none broke the 30cm limit - time was up for that species so it was onto a dog mark - got one on the first cast - then got another - others could get any
then fluked a flounder from the same mark - which was mixed ground - and then had a masssive huss on the 3 hook flapper - and kev had crossed my line at the same time - needless to say in all the comotion he shredded the 20lb after being on the top of the water for about 15seconds and got away
somewhere between 12-14lbs i reckon - me arm was wrecked between himself and kev reeling against me for most of the fight
would have won the comp with it - as noone had more than 3 species - most had wrass dog and pollack so would have taken it with the bigger fish
thats how it goes - 50lb 3 hook flappers from now on
up to sligo with work and was looking for some easy fishing - went to a pier and had a good chat with yorkshire man - a couple of fish turned up but nothing too exciting - mike was surprised we didnt have much action but it was on the ebb
the following night i went down below the lifeboat station in rosses point - the current was far more than i expected - 5 oz gone on first cast - 9oz were getting pushed to the side of the channel
took to messing around for minis down the side of the crumbled pier - and got a blenny nothing else
packed up and headed for a few pints and highlights of burnleys win!
