More Strangford Lough Mullet (Report & Pictures) - 12/08/09

Thu Aug 13, 2009 10:24 am

People: Me, K2 & Tom H

Tide: Up to high, over high and down to low water

Weather: Dry, bright and warm

Rigs: Float

Bait: Bread

Duration: Approx. 3.5 hours

Results: 1 mullet for Kerry1 & 1 mullet for K2

Myself and K2 had arranged to meet up with Tom H at our chosen mark and when we arrived he was already there and fishing.
k2 and myself joined him and we all began to fish. The tide was still on the rise.
The water was very clear and so if there was going to be any fish about we where going to be able to see them without any problem.
We had only been down for about ten minutes when I cast out for about the third or forth time. As things where still quiet with not many fish showing I decided to give my mum a ring.
With my phone in one hand and my rod in the other, that's when I got my bite which resulted in me catching my fish.
Why is it that every time you look away for a second or aren't paying much attention you get a bite!
My float went down very slowly. Seeing this I thought that it must just be hitting the bottom and so I struck very softly not thinking it was actually a fish!
The float however didn't come back up and so I stuck harder this time, still with my mobile phone in the other hand with my mum talking away to me.
It was then that I realised I actually had a fish on.
With the excitement I throw my mobile phone down on the grass with my mum still on the other end, i could hear her calling my name and talking to me, she was probably wondering what on earth was going on.
Tom had seen that I had a fish on and so he came over and netted it for me, thankyou mate.
He also took a quick picture before I put the fish back in.
We continued to see fish swimming about but not in the great numbers there has been over the last few days.
Tom and I got some good bites and K2 missed I don't know how many!
Half an hour later K2 caught his fish.
I netted it for him and took a picture before it was released back in safely.
That was all that was caught at this mark and the tide started to drop quite quickly so we moved on to the second mark.
I got soaked getting to this mark, that'll teach me for laughing at Dawsey a few nights ago when he got wet!
At this mark there was fish showing close in amongst the weed and rocks but we didn't manage to catch anything here.
We decided to head for home and get a chinese as we where all starving.
We all plan to go back to the same place tomorrow night again, fingers crossed we have more success, I can't wait!

Thanks Dawsey mate, we will be down every night this week including the weekend if the weather allows us. You'll get another one soon, I know you will. It's such a shame you lost that one on Sunday
Sorry for winding you up in my report about getting soaked on Sunday but it was very funny

I am just back from another session of mullet fishing with K2 and Thomas.
Tonight I am afraid that I have no fish caught to report back on
I had one on for about ten seconds or so and just when Tom was going to get his net it came off. It just flicked it's tail and it was away.
Aww well, at least I hooked it, that's difficult enough to do most of the time which means that what I am doing must be close to being right at least.
This doesn't make me feel any better though, i would have loved to have landed it.
I still had an enjoyable night however despite losing my fish, it's not all about catching, it's the laugh and the winding up you do with eachother while fishing.

Well done you guys. I tried Ards yesterday but no bites. Fish seem to be moving up earlier in the tide than a month or so ago. They don't seem to care that it is barely deep enough for them to swim in...

Hi Fenster, how's you?
I haven't tried Ards in a while, the wind has always been far too strong to fish it when I have went.
I have seen plenty of fish around mind you and as you said in very shallow water!
It's great to watch them - catching them is a different story all together :D
