Dungarvan 7th - 8th August 2009

Tue Aug 11, 2009 12:05 am

People: Just me
Duration: Friday 12am to Saturday 3pm
Tide: All sorts LW about 13.00, high about 19.00
Weather: All sorts. Mostly sunny and breezy. Some showers on Saturday.
Bait: Lures, rag and lug
Rigs: 2 hook up/down rig
Results:
About 20 bass, loads of schoolies, 1 golden grey mullet, pollock, dogfish, pouting.

Report:

Friday afternoon hit the oyster beds for some lure fishing at low water, 12am to about 3pm. 3 schoolies from first 4 casts among the beds so though it would be a great dat but it turned out to be very difficult fishing. Ended up with 4 good sized bass up to about 5lbs, all on bass bullet, from about 10 follows/splashes/chases. Lot of birds working the water in the distance which I asseme explained the lack of bass about.

Friday evening hit the Cunnigar about half way down the spit, fishing rag and lug. Never seen so many fish in one place in my life, bass leaping all over the place, shoals of them right up on the bank, and loads of mullet working the surface as well. Most casts ended up with a fish on before I could even get the rod on the stand, with at least 10 double hookups. Lost count of the number of schoolies up to about 2lbs I caught, and also ended up with about 14 good sized fish up to about 4 lbs once I could get through their kids. Also caught one bonus golden grey mullet (my first) as part of a double with a 3lb bass. Amazing site seeing the fish scatter when the lead hit the water! Some other chaps turned up for about an hour and saw them get a few fish as well before heading off.

That night headed to Clonee from about 10pm to 1am, only got 2 dogfish for my troubles though.

Next morning hit Cunnigar again from 6pm until about 8am, what a difference from the night before.. place was completly lifeless. Not even a bite! Was so bad I decided to head to Helvic for a couple of hours of the pier while I waited for the tide to go out, and got a few small pollock and pouting in the pier. Also saw a very strange sight of a small turbot of about 1lb coasting along the surface before I spooked him by trying to pub a bait on frond of him.

Hit the oyster beds again for the afternoon during low tide but very little to report. Had just the 2 bass on a small toby, the only 2 fish I saw all afternoon. Very few other people fishing out there and saw nothing else caught.

In summary, a good weekends fishing, but such a difference between the two days, it was like someone hit a switch overnight to turn off the fishing. Good fun all the same though and might try hit it again for the big tides in a fortnight. Will remember the suncream next time as well!

Well done Viper. I should have went with you in the evening. I talked to you in the Cunnigar carpark. Not just a difference a day makes. Four of us lure fishing out at the other end of the OBs on Friday only caught 1 small schoolie between us. Needless to say it wasn't by me. I fished the other mark i told you about Friday evening. Four or five other guys and not a bite between us. So I put in about 6 hours on Friday and saw 1 small schoolie. The bass were obviously following you around. I plan to get back down again in a couple of weeks, so might see you there. It can't be that bad for me again.

Hi to FMCN and Figs! Nice to put faces to some of the names here, I met FMCN before on a 'Cortaz' fishing trip last year to Clonea but it was dark at the time :-) .
Will try to get down for the next big tides myself assuming I can get the time off work.
Really is a hit and miss place, as I said to FMCN in the carpark all I've ever caught from the shore there in the past are freshwater eels, if you get conditions perfect you'll clean up, but any slight variation and it's a real struggle.
Must look up some of the other places down there for a bit of variety should the conditions not be right for Cunnigar.
Do many people boat fish for bass in Dungarvan? Saw one boat drifting just offshore with two chaps spinning so presumably there's an advantage in using one for mobility etc...?
