Cork Beaches 5th August

People: Me, Tom & Johnny, "MikeQ" and "Rory from Cork"

Duration:3.30pm-5.30pm and 8.30pm-midnight ish

Tide: HT 6.30pm ish

Weather:Moderate South Westerly dying later on, dry and a cracking full moon over the beach!

Bait:Mostly lug,rag and razor

Rigs: 2 hook flapper, pulley and plugs

Results:7 Bass




Report:Headed down to Cork with my twin 11 yr olds for a first time "boys trip" in search of a Bass. Arrived late Tuesday afternoon and seeing as high tide was close we nipped down to the Pier at Monkstown to kill an hour or two. Got the lines wet but all drew a blank though Tom swore he had a pollock chasing the lure to the surface (no reason to disbelieve him)! Tues night produced no Bass but several Guinness
Wednesday we met up with MikeQ and Rory from Cork who promised us some Bass fishing, and they didn't disappoint
Headed off to the first mark and after digging some fresh lug got set up. First cast and Rory snapped his rod.....looked expensive Mike lent him one but it was obviously a dud as no fish for him After a while of nothingness we moved a bit and soon Mike was into his first fish, a nice looking Bass which unfortunatley got injured on the retrieve so he is probably enjoying it as I type this
That was it for the afternoon and Rory had to leave us for work (scourge of the drinking/fishing classes ).
A bite from the chippy then off to meet Mike again for a spot of night fishing. This was something completely new to us so we were kind of excited!
Having arrived at the mark, we were pleased to see it was pretty much weed free. After about an hour or so Mike was first in using the razor, we were off and running. Never having beach fished before and never for Bass, it was all a learning process for me and the boys so when I decided I should check and change the lug bait to razor, you can imagine my surprise when I felt the take as soon as I released the gripper My first ever Bass, well chuffed
The next hour produced another 5 Bass for Mike (on my borrowed pulley 4/0 ) and 2 bites for me (in hindsight I was maybe using the wrong rig, 1/0 2 hook flapper).
Tom, meanwhile was playing with my other rod and the Silver Maria Chase and whilst yelping like a trapped monkey in a crocodiles jaws managed to lose a Bass in the surf Johnny was just content producing a birds nest to me every 10 minutes for my attention
What a cracking night and to top it all, watching the full moon rise up was just awesome, fishing heaven!

Incidentally, Mike and Rory had never met previously and it was only later on that night that Mike realised he had known Rory's brother for about 20 years! Strange world....

We were back down there this evening and only had 1 so ye got the best night for it...next time we'll get the lads their first bass ...cheers,rory

What a cracking session!! I expected to get a few fish to land six was fantastic. And im delighted you got one Fenton He was a lovely fish to pop your cherry with Me, Rory and a few others returned to fish the same mark tonight and about 5 of us blanked on bass The lads had a couple of very small turbot but that was it. Rory was the only person that managed to land one and he was a lovely thick fish around the 5 mark. What a huge difference a bit of surf makes when fishing for bass. Weather conditions had completely changed and we got down there to find the same huge moon over the beach with mars clearly visible under it. Fantastic sight. However last night, where there had been a nice breeze blowing straight at us and kicking up two or three breakers with some nice troughs in between, to tonight with no surf whatsoever. Sick as dogs we were!! It just never happened. I fished pulleys with size 3/0s on my supercast and my powertex and i threw rag, razor and lug into pretty much within 5 or 10 yrds of the same spot that produced all the bass for me the previous night and all i managed all night was one half hearted take on rag which i missed. Oh well Cant do nuttin bout the weather unfortunately. Still it was nice to be out on such a lovely night and still very enjoyable - Great to meet you Fenton, any time you wanna come down just let me know and we go for some more

P.S. Hate to break it to you Fenton but I had your pulley on my supercast. Cough Cough, the rod that I didnt manage to hook up with all night - I had one of me own on the rod I hit all the bass on - the powertex HAHAHAHAHA ooops But im sure it had nothing whatsoever to do with your pulley rig

nice season lads i d say i fished the same beach twice in the last week and not a single bite its a feast or famine mark

The tides are good around near us next week again every night , you should try and get out for a session.

Sorry to hear the next night wasn't so good. As for the rig, I forgot you had two baits out! What did you have on the successful one?

Yeah, Mullett next on the list though next week I am a bit stuffed with work but will try and get out.
