Report: An amazing evening to be out. The full moon rose over Dalkey Island from the time I arrived. The harbour was littered with photographers. They must have known something. Turns out there was some sort of lunar eclipse last night. Maybe that’s why there were no fish.

We met a fellow SAI.org member who’s username I have now forgotten. I’m fairly sure it began with ‘Corm’ but given that there are two usernames (that I’m aware of) beginning with ‘corm’ I’m confused as to which one we met.

The full moon seemed to affect their fishing exploits also as while I was there Stephen’s shore rockling and my LSD were the only fish caught by anyone.

I’ve decided that I don’t particularly like catching dog fish. It’s not that I don’t like them, I think they’re a great fish, but probably not helped my lack of experience, it takes me considerably longer to get a dog fish back in the water than say a Pollack or a whiting and I hate seeing them writhing and (I can only assume) gasping for breath as I try to unhook them. I’ve caught 5 or 6 now and that’s quite enough. Unless anyone can offer some advice as to who to unhook them quickly? I have been pinning them down as best I can and using pliers to try to unhook, which seems to be the quickest way to get them back in the water.

I hope the others had better luck after we left. Either way it was a beautiful night for fishing. That said, the lack of action grew tiresome so we retired to the Queens for a swift half on the way home!

According to Astronoly Ireland last night saw a 'Penumbral Lunar Eclipse'. Just so you know. Now, who knows how the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse effects the catching of fish??

It was I! From 9 to 11.45 we only got 2 rockling. Must be the moon, the tide was right, good rag, good mack bait, good rigs. Its a rip ravaged snaggy spot but there were barely any bites, not even mini whiting.

But on a high note, a BIN! A bin in colliemore! Happy days! Genius! About time!

Oh and sorry about the photographers lads, Im kind of a big deal round here, I usually lose them before I get to the mark.

I use 2/0 - 4/0 circle hooks which i've squashed the barb down witha pliers for Doggies.
They always seem to hook themselves just in the centre of the bottom lip, and I can have them back in the water in 20 seconds...

have to agree with spindlefist,i always use circles now as i find they always hook them selves in the corner of the mouth with these hooks.

I know what you maen about the Doggies and deepyly embedded hooks, of course you could just rip them out and throw them back in like a lot of people do

I'm using Circles for years and have never looked back. They are used extensively in SA and Australia where there seems to be a much greater emphasis on returning fish unharmed. Had 18 Dodggies in Greystones last week and all but one was hooked in the side of the mouth. The one that swallowed the circle hook got the fingers into the gut trick and a feel around to see if his inards were wrapped on the hook. Note : If one uses the finger approach be prepared for a sandpaper finger for a day or two . Ive caught fish from Dabs to Conger and Huss on Circle Hooks so they not just for big quarry anymore....

Lads ye should also Snell the Circle Hooks on rather than using standard knots. I reckon its better presentation, it creates

Thanks Kaner, I'll have to get myself some circle hooks now. I've never seen anyone just rip the hook from a doggie and I don't want to either, it's a pretty gruesome thought. Thanks for the link too.
