Report: The plan was to go down to Waterford for a couple of days bass fishing but with 50 or so frozen peeler in the freezer i decided to detour through Wexford and have a session after smoothies (my first this year). After speaking to one of the guys off the forum (thanks Danny M for the pointers), i left home to get to the mark before low water so i could fish the flood. After the 4+ hour drive arrived at the mark about 1.00 am. Conditions looked perfect, lovely still night and almost a flat calm sea. First time at this mark so just picked a spot and setup. Fishing by about 1.45 and had the first smoothie on the beach about 15 mins later just after low water. The next four fish came in the next 2 hours early in the flood then a quiet spell as the first glimmers of dawn appeared. I then had the last and biggest starry at just over 5.5 lbs near the end of the session at about 5.30. Only caught my first smoothie last year and that was tiny so 2 new PBs on the trip. Not big by some of the guys standards but i was delighted. Couldn't have asked for a better start to the weekend. Role on the bass fishing in Waterford.
and then the fishing Gods struck back.
Left Wexford at about 7 am for the 2+ hour drive over to Dungarvan, hotel sorted and a quick dose in the car before my first session over low water out at oyster beds in Dungarvan bay. Down at the Cunnigar carpark about mid-day and met a few other guys heading out. Waders on and set-off. Long walk out and out past the beds and i walk into a discarded oyster trestle and put a 2 inch gash in my waders. No point in complaining just keep on going, as i got deeper i could feel the water rising up inside the boot and then spilling over into the other leg. Great, to leg fulls of water. Could it get any worse. Well, yes it could, about 6 casts later the top 18 inches or so of my spinning rod snapped of casting a 30 grm lure. For f*** sake. No waders no spare rod, decided to cut my losses, save the brownie points for the next big tides in a couple of weeks and headed home. But at least i got the smoothies.
The rod was one of the Mike Ladle surespins from Veals made by Daiwa. Rated to 60 grms. It was bought a while ago but is essentially brand new. I think its only the 3 or 4 th time i've used this so no idea what happened. Just one of those things. I'll be bringing a spare in future.
Some photos

Oh, and i also got some peeler crab juice in my eye which stung like mad and its why i have that demented look on my face.

Thanks Danny. Hope to do the same trip in a couple of weeks if the hounds are still around. When do they usually disappear.
Yep i was using braid. It might have been a wrap around. Had't thought of that. It was just i wasn't putting much effort into the cast. Just flicking it out there and it snapped.

I plan to give them a ring. Even though it was new and i hadn't used it, i did buy it quite a while ago so i was thinking that may go against them doing anything, but we'll see.

Well done FCMN, great results on the first nite, someone up above was looking after you sending you in the wexford direction, pity about the gash in the waders and the broken tip but im sure the smoothies partly compensated for that

,,,ps,,, stay off the crab juice

Well done on the smoothhounds. But sorry to hear about the rod - I bought one of those Mike Ladle Surespins a few months ago - I will have to be extra careful with it now.
Pity about the waders too - nothing worse than sloshing around with waders full of water

Francis,
Great looking fish. Will definately have to head down that way some time soon.
Unlucky with the rod and waders.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Really splashed out and bought myself a new pair of fancy scierra waders with stocking feet. Just need some boots now, and 2 new spinning rods, both Greys. One is a 4 piece which comes in a carry tube as a backup. I'm not going to get caught out again. Hope I'm not tempting fate. Maybe better get a pair of cheap backup waders as well and a backup reel and a backup landing net and a pair of backup sunglasses...........
