Cork Beach / Rocks 19 & 22 July

Thu Jul 23, 2009 10:06 am

People: Myself

Duration: 2 hours on both nights (starting @ 8.30PM)

Tide: started an hour after high tide

Weather: Warm, light breeze

Bait: 1 oz. silver Toby

Results: 2 bass, 3 mackerel

Report:
Well I caught my first ever two bass in the space of three days after switching to lure fishing (previously hadn't had any luck with baits). Both bass were caught on the same 1oz. silver Toby lure at the same time on separate nights.

The first bass came in at 55cm & 3.5lb's, the second bass was approx 57cm and 4.25lb's (last night). I was spinning from rocks very close to small beach and struck both @ 10pm on the separate nights (deep twilight) which I guess was time they were starting to feed.

Both bass put up a strong fight, but in particular the 2nd heavier one. I've never experienced a fight like it before and it certainly got the adrenalin pumping! I'm now definitely hooked to the bass fishing :)

Well done on catching your first couple of Bass, I bet you feel great having now caught them :D
I caught my first one on a plug and it was brilliant :D
It was the last day of my holiday and it was only my second cast in.
I didn't even think that I was casting out far enough. As I was retreiving the plug all of a sudden I felt something hit. I reeled in and looked to see what it was and it was a Bass, my first one.
I had a smile on my face for weeks after that :D
Now I am totally addicted to Bass fishing, as far as I am concerned nothing compares to it 8)

nice one scombroid.
were they both on the same beach?? im lookin to try somewhere new with the lures as the other spot is starting to annoy me. everytime i throw a lure out they ignore it. the few ive connected with have gotten off pretty quick  .
congrats again.

Theres a knack to that beach Red, you have to lace the lures out as far as you can to get in touch with numbers of them. You will still drop an odd one but you get far more hits if you get the distance.

@red yes they were both caught from the same mark, standing on pretty much exactly the same spot. I caught them spinning off the rocks at side of beach, both took the lure not too far out, I'm guessing maybe 30 odd yards out.

BTW the 2nd bass had a gold coloured hue along its head and part way down its body - does this mean anything / is it common?

i got some fairly thin line diameter line last week and ive noticed the difference with distance. hopefully the weed wont be too bad over the weekend as theres a few spots i want to hit and finally nail one on a lure.

fill the spool up to the lip and use a low dia. line and a good size lure ...good distance

I have the opposite problem this year - Bait fishing = 61 bass; Lure fishing = 0 bass

Thanks all. I think I'll stick to spinning for another while before returning to bait fishing. Can anyone tell me whether there is any point in lure fishing in darkness or should one just pack away the lures about an hour after sundown?

Well done scombroid - newbie from Dublin, this is my first post. aiming to get me first Bss this summer. Can you pls tell me at what speed you retrieve the spinner? Superfast, fast, moderate, slow or alternate speed. Many thanks.

I'm pretty much a newbie also, but the two bass I landed on lures I was retrieving probably moderate - fast (maybe roughly 1.5 - 2 rotations of the reel handle per second) ?
