Shannon Estuary... we tried! July 18, 2009

Tue Jul 21, 2009 4:33 pm

People:me, Gabriel & Dennis

Duration: 10:30pm - 00:30am

Tide: supposedly flooding

Weather: supposedly good :(

Bait: Fresh Macks

Rigs: Pulleys

Results: (1) Bull Huss

Report:

It's time to get the species count up. The Thornback was the last on our list of new species and we have been wanting to get a Dogfish even before that one. Everytime I see reports about, all we got are dogs, we were hounded by dogs and more dogs... I keep asking myself how come I can't get a dog myself. Maybe its the mark, since I've fished that mark i've seen a few lads reeling in dogs... Hmmm maybe my rigs or bait presentation or tide or water temp.

Luckily all the Saturday shopping from the "NEXT sale" is over and the wifey... did let me go on for night fishing! woohoo. Called Dennis and dragged Gabriel as well. Off we go to the Mark. Headlights on and rod tip lights are ready.

Sent on the first cast and prepared other rods. Target for the night is either a Thornback, bigger than what Gabriel caught or the elusive Dogfish. Aha! the first bite is on and even though I can't see what I caught I know its something I have never caught before based on the weight and the unusual fight. Tide was still very low that we can barely see the water. Alas! I got my first Doggie...

This catch raised the ante for the night and pumped in the hopes that night fishing is better than day! Then the wind started to blow stronger... rains started to pour... it got heavier up to a point that we cannot see the light house across the estuary. We gave it five minutes to stop... :D... it didn't... then gave it another 10... still it didn't... gave it 10 more... after another 15 yes at last it did stop... :D :D

We still tried to continue with plans of staying until full High waters around 4am... Too bad when the rains have stopped by my jeans were all heavy and drenched :( :( :( ... Not suited for rains and had to call it a night. We all got off at 00:30 both happy and disappointed due to the shortness of the session. We didn't go blank and at the same time added a new one on the species list. It was an adventure with good learnings... From the list that I checked I forgot to look at the weather forecast for that night. Hehehe...

Planning for the next session and looking forward to new target species... looking for mini's before we go bigger...

Tight lines...

Yup Tony. That was a leather finger stall. Got it online for 3 pounds sterling each. It helps a lot in my casting with my fixed spool.
