bangor harbour friday 17th july 09

Fri Jul 17, 2009 11:12 pm

People: me and jordan

Duration: 5pm - 9pm

Tide: rise

Weather: windy, but dry

Bait: rag

Rigs: mini (size 4) 3 hook flappers and single mini rigs

Results: ME: 6 ballan wrasse, 3 corkwing wrasse, 2 pouting, 1 goldsinny wrasse 1 shore rockling and 1 pollack. JORDAN: 4 ballan wrasse, 2 pouting and the smallest codling i've ever seen

Report: after the strong winds killed any chance we had of a mullet hunt we went to plan 'B'. a bit of scratching around inside bangor harbour :D :D . so armed with various mini rigs and a pound of rag we arrived to find it was blowing a gale   . we decided to try the platform first and it was hit after hit    . the bites were coming thick and fast and the minis were stripping the rag from the hooks at a phenomenal rate. jordan just could'nt seem to hook them up, where as i was having more luck (for a change). it turned into a bit of a wrasse fest for a bit and sammy the resident harbour seal came over looking for a free snack   . he sat at our feet for an hour or so attempting to gobble up any fish that did'nt dive down straight away when released and gave us something to chuckle at :D . jordan started to have more luck hooking into the bites and got 4 ballan wrasse in quick succession and the smallest micro codling i've ever seen    . i got a wee shore rockling soon after and my first goldsinny wrasse of 2009 and we decided to move around to the steps where we could get some shelter from the wind as by now it had picked up and you could'nt tell what was bites and what was the wind nudging the rod tip    . the bites were not coming as frequently at the steps but we were at least able to see them, so it was a lesser of 2 evils    . we stuck it out for an hour or so before we wrapped it up with jordan getting 2 pouting and me a pollack. all in all an excellent wee session. nothing sizeable to talk of, but plenty of action all the same :D :D :D :D

well done lads was meant to be there myself but had a call out to work, heading tomorow with a load of mates who have never really been fishing before, thought it would be a good place for them to start, were scraping rods together from wherever we can get them, ive loads of mackerel feathers, spinners, spoons, and tobys but after reading ur report im thinking of three hook flappers, is there any where in belfast you can buy these pre tied as theres 6 of us going and i know there going to lose a lot of rigs, also where can i get some rag too ive got mackerel and sand eels in the freezer, braddles is my closest as i live in belfast city centre i bought a new rod in there today
http://www.daiwasports.co.uk/products/s ... -surf-rods as i broke my last one in the car coming home from a trip to donegal, anyways wish us luck as i have a reputation to live up to as told them yeah we will definatly catch something so i may have scudded us, cheers boyos gdluck

I can beat that codling Al   .Welcome back, great to see you both back out there. Had a similar day myself in Wicklow Harbour. Winds were more northerly as expected but still managed a few  . Had to move to the other pier later like yourselves.

well done lads, good to see you both back at it :D . looks like you had yourselves a pretty decent session there with plenty of speceis to keep you busy, looking at those wrasse is melting my head as i've still to get one.  . have some rag ordered so think i'll try browns bay or if that does'nt work out maybe waterfoot beach, its been a while since i've been out so hopefully i'll catch and have a reason to make a report later. :D :D

Nice one lads great session. Your tiny coodling is the same size as my biggest

I hope Jordan realises how lucky he is to have a dad like you Al. My dad plays golf  And Al it must be great bringing Jordan along with you. I was to go out last night. Bait sorted and new rod ready to go. My little one was teething and my misses at breaking point so I ended up stuck in

cheers mate. i was surprised how well it fished considering the wind and swell. a rough sea usually puts the smaller fish off :P

cheers brian, it's good to be back. we have a lot of sessions to make up for :P

     . he's a tame oul critter. i fished for over an hour pratically under his tummy in 6 feet of water. just goes to show what a lot of old nonsense it is when people reckon you'll not catch if there's a seal about    an old guy who was walking his dog came over and started telling us we should move on as the seal would scare the fish away. but after he saw me catch 3 fish from directly under the seal he soon changed his tune. excuse number one was that the fish did'nt spot the seal. excuse number 2 was that the seal did'nt spot the fish and excuse number 3 was that it was just luck on my part       oddly he did'nt hang around too long after the third fish. i reckon it was because he had ran out of excuses

the rag and mini rigs can be bought at belfast angling center. just buy flounder rigs as they have wee hooks that will do the trick for you. alternatively, just buy a box of 100 size 4 hooks (£7.99) and a box of 100 3 way swivels (£8.00). or as another option buy the small feathers intended for sandeel (£1.45) and cut the feather bits off them and you instantly have a 5 hook mini rig  if it's mackeral on feathers your after spin from the back of the eisenhower pier as some lads were getting them there last night as we were leaving. hope this helps you man and good luck :P :P

     who would have thought you'd get a bunch of anglers competing for the smallest fish    we're a funny breed alright    good to see you're still getting about dave :P . the weather is being a bit of a pain  . the fortnight my car was off the road the weather was smashing. not a breath of wind and blazing sun. as soon as i get the car back the heavens open up, it's blowing a gale and the seas are rough as heck :x :x :x :x typical

i'm heading out towards browns bay tomorrow man if you fancy a session :P . regardless of what direction the wind is blowing there's always somewhere around the island where you can get tucked away so the wind is blowing from behind you out to sea  your always more than welcome man. the more the merrier in my book :D

unlucky man. don't worry but, it won't be long before you have a wee fishing buddy in the making there     some of our best memories are form our fishing adventures. camping out on the beach or sleeping in the car for overnight sessions. it's not just about the fishing, it's everything that goes with it too. jordan cooking up a fry for breakfast on the beach of filleting his catches for supper. i've even started to teach him how to make my beer batter  PICELESS
