West Cork Beach, 10-07-09

Sat Jul 11, 2009 12:18 pm

People: just me

Duration: 2330-0200

Tide: low water at around 0214

Weather: dry, very light winds, patchy fog and a medium surf

Bait: frozen razor and 2 crab

Rigs: 2 hook flappers

Results: 2 small flounder and 4 small Bass to 3lbs 07oz

Report: finished work and headed to the beach. pleasently surprised to find a little bit of surf rolling as it was like a lake the last few visits, small bit of weed weed on the beach but not too bad. got bait into the water at around 2330, with razor on the top hooks and crab on the botton for the first few casts looking for a few flats. that theory was put to bed when i started to get little taps on the lighter rod. pulled in a little flattie which had taken the razor. next up was another small flounder but this time to crab. no sign of a Bass showing but i was hopefull of gettin one later on near low water. at around 0030 got a savage looking bite on one rod. i lifted into it and landed a small little fella who kicked like a bigger fish. 46cms and 2lbs 03 oz. as soon as the rod was out again it started knocking straight away but turned out to be weed this time  .

at about 0100 got another bite that nearly doubled the rod over and the tripod started to fall, as i grabed the rod and tried to lift into it the line went slack, i wound furiously but whatever it was had spat the hook and i only coaught up with the lead about 10 yards out. i was nearly sick, it seemed much a bigger bite than im used to. straight away the other rod went and i landed another fella, a bit bigger this time at 50cms and 2lbs 15oz. as soon as i got baits out again i was straight into another one, this time it was another small one, 45cms and 2lbs 06oz.

it went quiet then and i eventually ran out of razor but was mad for another few casts so i followed the tripod trails back up the beach to where i was earlier and picked up the bits of bait id taken off the hooks(desperate times call for desperate measures   ) i gathered enough for 4 small baits and cast out again. i was rewarded with 1 last fish, 54cms and 3lbs 07oz, not huge but the biggest of the night, taken on well washed out, well used razor

packed up at about 0200 and crawled the first 10 miles as the fog started to get worse. not a bad night and happy enough with what i landed but fairly P'd off with the one i didnt connect with

I've been asking for bass tips also, and the thread above is full of useful bass-related information :)

a few people told me a rising tide is better, others told me it doesnt mater but ive had more luck around low water, could just be a coincidence tho. i work shift so cant really pick what tides i fish and the last few times ive been there it just happened to be around low water.

Well done Dennis, pity you lost the big one.
Friday night was definitely the best day of the weekend to be out. I made the mistake of going out on Saturday morning for a morning/afternoon session. I don't think I have even fished in such abysmal weather   Although I did manage to get a couple of bass - I will do a report on it later.
Then spent Sunday night fighting with clumps of kelp the size of cars

thats 2 really big bites ive lost there in 2 weeks, the first one was hooked but bit through my 15lb snood so probably my own fault, ive since upped them to 25lb amnesia.
the 2nd one the other night was just bad luck, unless i was holding the rod i couldnt have gotten it quicker and i was winding as fast as i could but couldnt catch up with it but never did

as for the weed, ive been pretty lucky there, the few times its been bad the wind has been comming across the beach blowing it into one corner so further up the beach has been fishable but only just. not sure whats itll be like tomorrow night after all the winds but might give it a go anyway after work.

you must be camping down there Dennis  ?? We've caught bass there on any state of tide, so wouldn't let that be an issue. Might see you down there again, although need to go and snag myself a ray so might concentrate on that instead.
I'd say it'll be pretty weedy down there for the next couple of days......

no im not camping there but the thought did cross my mind so i could fish it at dusk and dawn
ive caught fish on all stages of the tide too but my 3 biggest fish there have all been within an hour of low water so im probably just being superstitious. im gonna check the wind sock in work tonight before i leave, if its southerly im gonna head home. hopefully itll be a westerly tho as i might fine a fishable patch altho met eireann are forecasting 15km S/E.

I agree, I always do apart from when I get tired and use the tripod to rest for a while. It means you feel any slight bite at the end of your line and can strike straight away for it rather than wasting time getting to your rod which is on a tripod. You can sometimes miss bites and fish doing that.
Well done Red on catching your fish :D
