west cork beach 05-07-09

People, me and a friend from work Peter:

Duration, 2130-2230 with lures and 2300-0045 with bait:

Tide, low water at around 2300:

Weather, breezy and nice to breezy with heavy showers:

Bait, frozen razor:

Rigs, me, 2 hook flappers and peter had running ledgers, size 2 hooks:

Results, me 5 Bass to 5lb 14oz and peter 4 Bass to 3lb 06oz:

Report: i promised Peter the Bass virgin that id try to get him off the mark so collected him and brought him to my favourite beach. when we got there a nice surf was rolling so i was optomistic that we'd get one or two. we started off with the spinning rods and i got hit a few times but didnt connect properly and lost the fish. by 2230 we gave up and decided to try some bait.
first baits were in the water at around 2300 and i got a massive thump while i was setting up my second rod. a good scrap followed and i landed a nice 66cm fish of 5lbs 14oz. my biggest of the new season  . things were looking good. i put on fresh bait and cast out again. while i was finishing the second rod i noticed the first had gone slack so i started reeling in. this fish didnt seem as big but was scrapping for all it was worth. shortly after a little playing i brought it in, a little schoolie of 41cms and 1lb 09oz.
i was hoping peter would get one and as i was putting the little fella back he left out a roar(peter, not the fish  ). i looked up to see him in the water with the rod. he got his first Bass. it wasnt a monster but a lovely fish of 53cms and 3lbs 06 oz, to be his biggest of the night.
it was quiet then for a while till we both got bites. i landed another nice fish, 59cms and 4lb 12oz, while peters was a modest fella at 47cms and 2lbs 08oz.
we both got a few more after that and were gonna stay till the bait was gone but just before 1 it started lashing and we were covered by black clouds. it didnt look like it was gonna stop for a while so we decided to head off, both happy that we landed some fish.
this equaled my best ever night here when i also had 5 Bass but the fish were a bit bigger tonight. i dont think it was coincidence that there was a good surf both nights.
the other fish we landed were, 46cm, 2lb 05oz, 47cm, 2lb 04oz, 45cm, 2lb 02oz, and 44cm, 2lb 01oz with another few dropped on the way in.

something tells me if you were with us we'd have had about 20 each    . i also noticed that nearly all the fish were taken when the moon was out. when it was covered by clouds they didnt seem to be interested in the bait. could this just be a coincidence or what????

Well done guys, yeah i dont think its just bass that get affected by moonlight, over the winter it seemed that the fish went off the feed when the moon was covered, but as soon as the sky cleared rod tips bounching. There must be something behind it all, perhaps the extra light being given off by the moon helps?

Well done Dennis - great fishing.
I didn't do so well myself over the weekend - I was fighting a loosing battle with the weed - although I did manage one bass (54 cm).

to think me and Pete had that beach pretty much to ourselves for a couple of years (or at least we met very few other anglers down there). Nice to see it being good to someone else I suppose

cheers for the comments lads. the beach was spotless. no weed around at all. i was there last week and it was disastrous with the weed. very hard to get away from it. i found a spot that wasnt too bad then it came in there. it was so bad i was pulling in a huge clump and only realised i had a Bass on the bottom hook when i got it onto the beach    .

i have it to myself most nights :D , alto did meet pete there last week and he pulled in a few on lures while i caught some kelp  . got there another night a week or 2 ago and was a few other guys fishing. i was nearly sick as 4 of them were in the spot i usually fish. "LUCKILY" it was very weedy that night and i didnt see anyone pull in a fish and they all left about an hour after darkness, hopefully thinking it was useless and not worth comming back to:lol:    .
