Co Dublin, 20/06/09 - Session No 2

Sun Jun 21, 2009 3:00 pm

People: Me and m.b.3

Duration: approx 4 hours

Tide: 2 1/2 hours of the flood, 1 1/2 hours of ebb

Weather:Fine

Bait: King rag, Lug

Rigs: Pennels, 2 hook flapper, 3 hook flapper

Results: Me 2 bass, 43cm/55cm, Mark a few flounder, 1 dropped bass

Report:

With Mark not gonna be ready until 7pm, and a bit of success with the rag last night I headed northside to dig some snakes, very slow digging and the place was reminiscent of the moon, craters everywhere  anyway got enough....just.

Mark collected and enroute to the venue, it was gonna be touch and go how much time we would get to dig our lug and upon arrival we had to dig well away from our fishing spot, but it was 1/2 an hour well spent and 15 or 20 big lug would be ample for a short enough session.

Got set up well into the flood, and thankfully the weed wasnt anywhere near as bad as it was the last night.

Mark went with the flapper size 2's on 1 rod, I was fishing 2, a pulley pennel with a 3/0, 6/0 combination, and a 2 hook flapper with 3/0's. I was all out for the bass, mark was once again hedging his bets. Well it worked for him the night before, so why not

Not much happening for the first hour or 2, Mark was getting a few flatties, but the bars o' silver hadnt made an appearance yet, well not for us anyway. There was a foreign guy fishing down the other end and he got a small bass. I'd say it was only around 30cm, but difficult to judge from 100 yards away. Nice to see him throw it back all the same, and he actually seemed like a really nice guy, sometimes its easy to pre-judge these fella's based on an accent :!:

As the darkness had set in, and with the tide at the top I got a couple of rattles, not bassy at all, but a bit strong for flounder :?

Anyway, picked the rod up, kept a bit of tension in the line....a stronger bite, struck, missed the fish  so just popped the rod back in the tripod and hoped he'd come back.

10 minutes later the bites developed again, got the rod in hand, waited for a good pull, struck, yeh fish on. 1st bass, 43cm......., kept for the pot, he'll be sunday lunch :D

All quite again then for sometime, Mark was alternating between the 3 hook flapper and a pennel, and he was getting the odd flounder on the smaller hooks.

Very little flounder action last night, but much more tonight, can only put that down to the horrible weed that was around the last night.

Was getting plenty of flounder tapping away at the big baits on the pennels, so regular changes of bait where called for.

Mark dropped a small schoolie by his feet, maybe it wasnt gonna be his night.

I then got another few rattles, as before not typical bass bites, but too strong for flounder, anyway the bite developed and I duly got my 2nd bass, 55cm....put this lad back to fight another day.

All quite again then for the rest of the evening.

A few differences between last nights session and tonight, last night the bass where ripping the rods out of the tripod with each bite, tonight they were much more tentative.

Secondly, with both bass I got tonight the bites started within seconds of the bait hitting the water.....maybe the splash of the lead and bait had attracted them :? Anybody else notice this happening to them?
