Fahan Co. Donegal 18/06/09

Fri Jun 19, 2009 11:07 am

People:me & mick

Duration:8.30pm-1.00am

Tide: Low at 9.30

Weather:warm but blustery west wind

Bait:mackeral, squid

Rigs:pulley, 2 hook flapper

Results:me 2 thornbacks, 1 dogfish
mick 1 thornback

Report:Arrived on the beach and had lines in the water for what was usually prime time just before dead low water but we were both plagued by weed as there still seemed to b a bit of a rip in the current. Some VERY black clouds were moving all around us with torrential rain falling in buncrana but we stayed dry :) but catching nothing but weed until about 10ish when we pulled in a few crabs which to be honest we did contomplate counting :x
Mick then had a few little twitches on his rod and pulled in a thornback just over 7lb :D :D
Things were still very quiet on my rod and I was begining to feel the pressure and thankfully I soon had a 5.5lb thornie however when mick came over to inspect it he discovered I had desperate tactics employed, a tip light attached behind the hook as an added visual attracter.
Now I reckon that it's really no different to using flouescent beads but mick has demanded that I allow you guys decide is it within the acceptable practices, is it sporting, is it simply being inventive or as mick suggested was I cheating
This was followed by a dogfish and another thornback at 7lbbefore it all died down as the tide began to push up the channel again bringing all the weed with it :x , so all in all a wothwhile trip

nice fish, i blanked when i went to fahan, but then i am only a beginner

as for the tip light, i personnaly see no reason why ya cant do that, any added attractor is good if its catching ya fish :D

maybe someone with a competitive edge might disagree

nice wee session guys + pic's
as for the tip light, well at the end of the day its just being used as an attracter, witch is being inventive. we all try a wide range of things to get a catch when things are slow, so fair play to you, you tryed something differant and got a result, i know a few guys that even put them on to lures and get very good results with the pollock and coalies.
bet you everyone that got them boxs of cheap tip lights out of lidl will be trying that one now
now were did i put mine

It's an acceptable and widespread tactic to use lightsticks when nighttrolling for Broadbill Swordfish.

So, if he insists on giving you grief, insist right back that you were fishing for Bb Swords!

I always use tip lights at all my night trips it makes sense .You know were your hooks are.I learned this after many a hook had to be taken out of my finger.

well mick I hope all those responses will satisfy you
I've taken a lot of credit in some of those replies for the tip light idea   (which I'm glad to do) but I must confess that I once seen gordan using it about a year ago, thought I'd better give some sort of acknowledgement if I'm ever to face him again.

nice one lads :P the old glow lite on the rig works a treat. we do it all the time when things are tough going and it deffo helps the catch count. you would be suprised just how inquisitive the wee fishies can be   and the green ones seem to work well on the conger gear too

well done on the ray and for being inventive, its great to try out different methods and rigs to see how they work,i use baited mackerel feathers for ray and they work great in the day time, the colors seem to attract them
keep trying different methods, looking forward to seeing what works for you
